I want to build a XM177. My first question is can I use a slickside upper or do I need to use a teardrop upper receiver.

Either one would be correct, the XM177 model 609 had the forward assist the XM177 model 610 was a slick side.

I type way too slow...

It depends…The XM177 used a slick-side upper.  The XM177E1 had a forward assist, as did the XM177E2.  Take a look at the RETRO BLACK RIFLE website.  There's quite a bit of info concerning retro Colt carbines.

I think half the board has that one in line.
The other half already have built one.
