I just picked this up the other day but I have one question. The buttstock doesn't look like an original, though it is a 2 position one. I know this SP1 is one from the last batch because of the serial # and finger-grooved pistol grip of the A2 series. Does anyone know if the buttstock changed as well for the last ones? Other than the buttstock and front pin being swapped out, everything else seems to be original. Here's some pics.

Yes the buttstock has been changed, and the A2 pistolgrip was also added. The lower was originally a fixed stock SP1 rifle. The top half is a Colt Carbine upper ( A real nice one by the way. ) HTH,

The earliest cabine I've ever seen is in the 87k range.

I don't think any carbines were produced by Colt's Patent Firearms.

I don't think it is an original carbine either.  I bet the castle nut is not staked.

Thanks for the help; I thought it was an original SP1 carbine with that serial# but didn't realize I was looking at six digit serial #'s not five digits like mine...... oh well I'm still happy. Ranchland you were right, the castle nut isn't staked. Now I need help with casting marks on my upper/barrel. What do they mean and does this help identify the year range for the upper?
Here are some pics.

A CMP B barrel is an early carbine barrel.  SN 87k has one and SNs up to at least 104k has one.  Sometime after 104k they changed the markings to CMP CHROME BORE.

I think the upper is from 78-79.

What about carbine barrels with no markings?
forging code 'LM' w/ forward assist.
barrel and upper appear to have never been seperated..
I had the forearms off once and do remember a 7 or L stamped on the barrel.

Thanks again ranchland; so from the info you and Nambu have given me, I know my lower is from 73-74, my upper is from 78-79 and my buttstock along with the pistol grip have been changed. It feels good to know more about my rifle.hanksOh one more question, what is something like this worth? I just want to make sure I got a good deal, which I'm pretty sure I did.

I got this one the other day, its serial number is SP141xxx, original carbine.  2 position stock and A1 grip.  My upper has the same markings as your, C M and my barrel is marked C MP CHROMEBORE.  My lower has different Colt markings, but can't make them out from my pic, and the rifle isn't with me at the moment, so can't check these.

Nice rifle you got there, love the weight and feel of these.

As is, your rifle may break $950-$1000. Unfortunately, it is worth more in parts than complete.

Glenlee, yours looks original.
