I have a problem with a 605 build. Took it out today to test fire and the problem started. It would shoot and eject one but would not pick up one from the mag. My guess is that the gas whole in the barrel is to big. Has anyone had any experience with this problem. I would like to get it to run, but if I can't fix the problem it will become a 605M261. It will be my most expensive 22 I own. I have confidence in the guy's here for some insight on how to fix the problem.

Thanks Guy's

Gas hole is too small.  Load 1 round into the mag and fire it.  If the bolt locks back it is cycling OK.  If not, gas port is too smal and bolt is not travelling all the way back.  Now you know why the .gov never bought any.

What was the temperature?  That seems to be the big issue with the 605's.

Hi VAAR, the temp was 38 degrees. I enlarged the gas whole in the barrel and it seemed to start to grab the round out of the mag. I left it go at that because it got dark out side, will pick up tomorrow. Thanks guy's for pointing me in the right direction.

I would find out the proper size and stick to it.  Also, shoot some Wolf to gum up the gas tube. I had to do this to get my 10" running properly and now it sings a lovely tune.

If I drill out the gas whole larger till it works in 38 degree weather I wonder if it will work in 70 or 80 degree. Let me know Luscious

I knew AR ownerships was an exact science, but I didn't know until now just what it entailed!

Wolf works great for sealing up the gastube around the fsb. Mine leaked for about 50 rds and had cycling problems.  By the time the leak clogged up it started running great!

Thats a good article.  Can explain how the m16 platform can shortstroke with too much gas too.

You should IM uxb.  He is really up on the temperature thing, having experimented widely with his.  My information is anecdotal only.

I agree with contacting UXB if he has a runner, if not maybe 45Bravo since his work.  You are risking ruining your barrel unecessarily since there are people who know what size works best. I don't think experimentation needs to be done because they know the best size gasport.

Don't ask me.  I ruined 4 barrels trying to come up with the magic gas port size.

Sounds like 45Bravo has it figured out.

The real deal baby!

I don't know the model, no one seems to know and Colt's paperwork is blank in the areas I need info.    I will probably never positively ID it.

It's also '65 vintinge

If you spring for the happy switch you don't have to SBR

I didn't mean to hijack your thread, but I speak from experience on these stubby barrels (even though mine's factory)

It would be nice if he would share that information with the masses, especially since he isn't doing barrel work right now.

He's in the process of fabricating and wiring up a new-and-improved workshop with more floor space and upgrades that will make it easier for him to do barrel work, parkerizing, and reproducing retro parts and moderators.

He will be up and at capacity in a few months and I don't mind waiting.

I'm not in a big hurry either, I just don't understand all of the secrecy behind a simple gas port size.

I'm pretty sure that when I get around to my 605 project, I can figure it out myself. I just think that reinventing the same wheel is a waste of time.

It may not be as simple as the gas port size.  It could also be the angle of the hole in relation to the bore.

I can build a 10.0" upper that will run like a house afire, and those are the most notorious for being picky.

But I would start with a barrel, chop and thread it, try to get it to run, pull the FSB, adjust the gas port incrementally larger, reinstall the FSB, etc...

Then start the whole process over with a different barrel.

4 barrels later I said "I am an idiot".

If you figure it out, be sure to let us know.  I may have been able to get them to run if I had been using an Edgewater spring guide, but I don't know...

Most people already know this but sometimes it is overlooked.  Remove bolt from carrier, and slide carrier down the upper by hand and see if there is any resistance as the gas tube slides into the carrier key.  Any unusual resistance may be a problem.

With a little luck that should be just about the right timing to have 605 barrel work done.
Thanks for the 45Bravo update.

Yeah and I sure wish I still had that barrel..especially since I'm starting my own E1.

I will for sure, it will probably be a couple of months before I get started. I've got all the parts, I just don't have the time.
