Hey I just picked up a sweet SP1 which is very hard to come by here in mASS I have looked over several areas of this websight and a few others and now I am confused with determining the date for my new SP1 so any help would be appreciated. It has a serial number SP16077* Which appears that it could fall under either 1971 or 1982 per the chart. I am going towards the 1982 but your assistance would be great. Barrel: Marked "CMP chrome bore No markings under the handguards. (maybe wrong but I have not had them off yet) A1 birdcage and lock washer style washer Front sight has a C near the front sight area and below it near the barrel is the bell with an M in it Upper Marked C M below rear sight area L --> R on rear sight area of carrying handle. Both apertures are pretty small. Original style ejection cover. T - style charging handle. No forward assist Armalite style flat handguard ring Triangular hand guards Lower Big-hole, of course. Early grip butstock has trapdoor Only the trap door is checkerd and the rest of the butstock appears to be plastic Paint near the bold release Fire Control Group The usual MPC type marking and parkerized. Firing pin retaining pin is not solid but cotter pin style Key is staked with four points near hex-head screws. Carrier is parkerized with a C marking. Firing pin is not big-head style. Hammer is marked with a circle 7 and a circle C Misc. Sling swivels are not plastic coated. Sling is black M1/M14 style, but hook end has sewn loop around it with no buckle. Furniture is matte black. Hole in upper buttstock screw only. |
Congrats on buying a real Colt! You be happy with it! 16k or 160k will make a lot of difference. I'm guessing 160k based upon the upper receiver and barrel markings. I think it has has some parts swapped out. The markings on the barrel, upper receiver, trapdoor buttstock don't match the chrome MP bolt. (I'll bet the bolt has been swapped out) Trigger and disconnector don't sound correct but a pic (IM it, don't post it) for confirmation. Nevertheless, it is a great rifle! |
Thanks for the compliment. I read over some of what I had stated and edited it. To save some time I had copied the post above mine and made corrections. Well in my haste I forgot to proof read it. My kids were ready to go do someting so I dropped the ball. The bolt is not chrome. It has a serial number SP16077*. I will try to get some pics to get some clarity on the other items. Thanks again! Anyone else got some ideas to share? |

Thanks for the input! I never realized they used the triagular handguards that late into production. It is a clean rifle that is what drew me to her. Hey it would have been nice if it was as old as me but she still has some age to her! She is getting a CLP bath as I write this. I got her and have not had a chance to clean her up until now. She needs a good soaking and then a wipe down...then off to the range! I am a happy man. |
Oh, now that's better. It looks like you've found yourself a nice rifle. Doc |
