Anybody think it would look stupid to get a NoDak Spud lower and have "COLT M16A1" along with the prancing pony logo and "AUTO" engraved on it?

I am throwing that idea around, but an not too sure yet.  Or would I look like a MAJOR poser?

Im not sure about copyright infringement issues on that one.

It's sort of like building a Ferrari copy on a VW bug chassis.

Well, that's unfair to NDS, whose receiver is as good or better than the Colt.

But a genuine Colt M16A1 is a multi $k firearm...you see what I mean.

Of course, the H&R 'Food Lion' and US PROPERTY would be cool ;)

(Auto is def. poser)

Doubt you will find anyone to put Colt & "the prancing pony logo" on it, but if you do let us know who & where.

No one's gonna do the prancing pony and COLT and such. But you could get the M16A1 and US prop. markings. I've actually been thinking of having that done, but with XM177E2 instead of M16A1

ETA: 2 things. If you find someone to do the Colt logo and such, like hk45 said, PLEASE let us know. And 2nd, if you're gonna do this, get the following:

PROPERTY
OF U.S. GOVT.
M16A1

What about a LEO mistaking it as a real one and arresting for it? Just curious, not trolling.

I will tell the LEO to open it up and use his brain.

More comments on the markings, please.

Oh, Should have said I like the " U.S. Property  M16A1" markings the best.

sorry

As far as 'auto being poser' or 'leo' questions go, I have a Spike's Tactical which has three position markings, but it has a high shelf internally.

I think Superior Arms did a run of lowers like that too.

They did. Without the funny Face. I've got a couple.

I was thinking about The G.M. Hydramatic Division rollmarks myself.

I just had 7 lowers marked by Orion Arms. They did a fantastic job and had all 7 back to me in a couple of days!  Had all of them marked AUTO and Property of US Govt.  Will look a lot better when they are anodized. It was hard to get it to look as good in the photos as in person.

Also all but two are going to be SBRs so they did the engraving under the trigger guards on 5 of them.

I do wish NoDak would have moved their engraving a little lower on the magwell.  It does not leave a lot of room at the top for larger items.

I did have them mark one different. This one I am making into a DOE clone with a genuine DOE upper.

Why is it that people that sell dummy TSMG recievers can engrave "COLT" and "AUTO ORDNANCE" I would assume they are both copywrited???????
9/18/2007 6:54:07 AM EDT
[#14]
I personally have not seen details of the TSMG replicas. But if they are just putting the "words" COLT or Auto Ordinance on dummy receivers then they are probably not violating trademark law.

If they are using the COLT stylized C trademark Logo or any other trademarked Logo they must have a license agreement, or should have.

I don't know if engraving a receiver would make you look like a total poser, but, it would still be a far cry from the real thing. While mine isn't US Property marked, it's close enough for me.

As for the LE aspect, there are very few officers out there that would know the difference between full auto and semi auto parts, much less, how the gun should function. However, all of them can read. And, if they see AUTO engraved on the receiver, they might have some questions. I would know the difference, but I don't know if they would.

I've had some custom engraving done to a couple of my Colt A2 receivers by Orion Arms that came out great looking, although he was unable to reapply anything new with Colt. I am looking to backdate one of my Colt A2 receivers to an A1 style with a reapplication of the "COLT" in earlier block lettering. I know I can get a great NDS receiver but I just want that Colt receiver with pony logo for my retro project.

Okay, I'll bite. Why would anyone want to own an AR15 with "Property of US Govt." on purpose???

because I want it to look like the real deal.  I am building an M16A1 clone for my dad's Christmas present.  He carried an M16A1 from 1967-68 in VN.  I got him an M1A last year and this was the obvious choice.  Next year perhaps an M-79...

It also has a very interesting serial no.

I'm sure that one is Spike's dealer's copy.
