I thought I might do a little write up on the way I made my field expedient sling that I've got on my 653 clone.

I started with a general purpose sling that has multiple uses in the military.

I started by Dremiling off the snap hook on both ends.

I then take a piece of 550 cord about 12" long and feed it through one end of the sling.

With a piece of the inner cord from another piece of 550 cord, I then tie and wrap the overlapping ends of the 550 cord.

I then feed the tied ends into the end loop on the sling to hide the tied ends and to give it a more finished look. This becomes the end of the sling to be used at the front sight base.

For the butt end, I take another piece of 550 core, this time about 20" long. I feed it through the end of the sling and loop it back through the end a second time.

The front end must be attached first by feeding the looped end of the sling through the FSB and then passing the entire sling through the loop.

The butt end can then be fed through the stock and tied with a square knot.

When it's all done you've got a nice wide sling that's good and quiet because the metal clips have been removed.

That pretty much the same concept as an Israeli sling, great idea, a very cheap way to make one

Very nice tutorial DocMike.

I have strong inclination that the Israeli's developed their current slings after using the US military GP straps for years.

Back in the day we rigged up "patrol carry" slings the same way.

Good stuff DocMike.

I posted a very detailed photo instruction post on here right after the retro foru went on air on how to make a braided 550 chord braided sling. If there is any interest I would be happy to repost it.

I believe that mooremilitaria has them. It is just a GP strap and is the same thing I believe as a 2 quart canteen strap but has been around alot longer.

DM, I remember that original post of yours, in fact, I have the whole How-To printed out somewhere around here. It's all your fault that all my military bags with zippers now have 2"-3" braided pulls on them.

Doc, do you think it would be possible to burn the two ends of the 550 cord together instead of tying it with the inner cord? Or would that not hold as well?

I do not mean to steal his post on this but burning the ends together just create a weak spot and will come apart sooner or later, and probably more sooner than later.

Yea, I don't think it would hold too well. One nice thing about tying it is that the overlapping ends fit pretty tightly inside the sewn loop on the strap so that the tie stays hidden.
