My brother has an upper that he needs help identifying. I don't have it in front of me, but I just talked to him on the phone and got all the markings he could find.

The upper receiver had no really identifiable marks. It is an "A1" style upper. There may be a mark above the ejection port...too hard to tell. It may be a 1 or 7.

The front sight has a mark of "3R" and then maybe a "W" or a crown symbol.

The barrel is 20" and of a pencil profile. The markings forward of the front sight are "FNMI MP Chrome Bore"

The carrier looks and feels like it's chromed or nickeled. It's not extremely shiny, but it is extremely slick. The firing pin in not shrouded. The carrier is NOT a half-circle. The carrier is marked with a C of the left side. The bolt is marked MP.

That's it.

Thanks in advance for all the help.

The barrel is an FN manufactured GI replacement part.  FN never built complete A1 guns.

Is the front lug of the upper counterbored?  Does it have a Forward assist?

If the marks by the ejection port you mentioned look like this, then it's a colt.

The top one is a "C" in a square, and the bottom is a "VP" in a triangle.

Thanks!

I'll have to check the upper myself in a few days.  Over the phone he said he couldn't find any definitive markings on the upper.

The upper DOES have a forward assist.  I forget to mention that earlier.  It is the teardrop style forward assist.

I'm not sure what you mean by "Is the front lug of the upper counterbored?"  The front pivot lug?  If so, I'll have to check in person.

It also has the A2 flash suppressor, not sure if it's a crush or peel washer...I'll check that too.

Could this be a re-barrelled .gov upper?

Anybody have an idea of the value?  I know I know...whatever someone is willing to pay.

The FN barrel means this is almost definately a rebarrelled govt. upper.

Early Colts, and I believe H&Rs as well had the left side of the front pivot lug counterbored.  Colt quit doing this in the early 70's.

I'll probably get a chance to look at the upper myself this weekend.

How would one go about pricing a rebarrelled .gov upper?  I don't imagine something like that is in the Blue Book.

I'm not sure if he wants to sell it, but he'd like to know if it's worth a significant amount more than what he paid for it.

I can buy basically brand new Colt GI A1 uppers with bolt and carrier, 1/12 twist, [some other twists also like 1/7] for $400.00 OTD. I consider that to be a pretty fair deal. They are out there but harder to find then a couple of years ago.

If it's a unused rebuild [after rebuild] $400 is OK, if lightly used $350, if used well $300 tops for me. They might go higher or cheaper in your area. I happen to just know a dealer who has a good supply of them so I might be a bit off.

I appreciate the info.

Could you PM me the source for those uppers?  I'd like to pick one up for myself.
