I picked up a 16" SP1 carbine upper at a gun show and I am trying to figure out how old it is.  I checked the SP1 data base but there is some conflicting info.  The upper has the CM forge code and the barrel is stamped C MP B.  The upper also has the triangle and square C stamps in front of the port cover.  Any help? thanks

I'm sure Ekie will come along at any moment. From what I have read the Carbine was introduced in 1977 and there is a carbine listed in the data base with the same features from '78. I would imagine its an earlier one with the C MP B barrel. It is a large hole upper?

Yes it is a large hole upper,  no case deflector or forward assist.  I forgot to mention that the front sight has the C but no bell marking.

Retracted until I can research this more.

I'd measure the barrel...and post pics.

I had an SP1 barrel just like that.  RichardS has it now.

It is definately 16".  Exact same length as my 6520 barrel.  Scottryan,  I put a Colt carbine on layaway at the local shop that is stamped C MP Chrome Bore.  Thats what got me thinking about this upper.  The carbine also has the alluminum stock with vynal coating.  Should have that in a couple weeks.

You know this kind of reminds me of my 20" A1 rifle I have. I have always wondered about it. It fits Ekies A1 profile perfectly except for the fact that the front sight base has only the C and no apparent Bell. I have wonder if the Bell is just lost in the forging or what but it has always puzzled me.

I think the one I had came of sn 138k It seemed like an oddball that was years off since Colt went to the CHROME BORE marking at least 4 years before they released the 6001. I'm positive that RichardS has it now.  I haven't seen him post in quite a while though.

Thanks so far guys.  I am thinking this is early 70"s.  Any other info?

They didn't make SP1 carbines until around '78.

It is an odd one. As ranchhand and I mentioned, the carbine wasn't introduced until the late 70's, but they switched from the B marked barrels to Chrome Bore in 74. They obviously had leftovers that they used first.

Your probably right about it being a left over.  The upper and the barrel are in really good condition,  look to have been shot very little.  I guess it was not too bad for $200.
Either way I am happy with it.  Can't wait to pick up my carbine.

$200 is a steal for sure!
