Hi, I'm new around here but have been lurking in the background for some time. I just bought a retro upper, an a1 with no marker on the reciver except for some stampings in front of the ejection port and c mp c on the underside of the barrel behind the flash hider it also has the tear drop assist but no deflector. I hope to date it once I recive it.

My real question is do you guys think a bird cage or three prong should be used in this build. It has a bird cage now but I'm leaning twoard the three prong. Also did the three prong do it's job and why was it replased with the bird cage?

Thanks for the help

It's a Colt A1 upper with a Colt barrel. The birdcage is correct.

Think they made the switch because the 3 prong caught on things alot.

Here's what the PM (comic book style) says about it:

Another thing: When you're crawling or walking through the brush, make a mental note to make sure you don't get the flash suppressor caught in a bush. It catches easy, y'know.

And also, I think the 3 prong just looks way cooler on a 20" A1.

I would leave the bird cage on it.  It is correct for the upper.

The birdcage is correct for the barrel's date, but a three prong is what gives the A1 its "look". Unless you're wanting to keep it period correct, a three prong is never wrong on an A1. My vote if for the prong. You can always build a second with the cage. :)

Yes, there's barely any flash at all out of a 20" bbl. Unless you're using XM193 that is...

flash suppressors from top to bottom (3 prong, bird cage, homemade vortex copy, vortex, YHM, YHM)
Keep in mind this test was to demonstrate extreme conditions by using an SBR and XM193.

All I've ever seen (even shooting at dusk around 5:30-6) is a small ball of flame in the middle of the flashider, never ANYTHING like any of those.

Well this is on an SBR.  This is the reason why the moderators were developed for the XM177 series.  I would think on a full-length rifle the effect would be far less dramatic.

The difference between the stock FHs and the YHMs (or even the vortex for that matter) is truly amazing. Great info!
