I recently received a used A1 buttstock that is in otherwise nice shape, but the material (fiberglass?) near the front end of the buffer tube recess in the stock is brittle and chipping slightly.

I can only guess that this is caused by solvents creeping into and sitting in that area for some time.

I was able to chip most of the brittle pieces away (which went into the stock recess about 1.5".

It doesn't appear that it will worsen much very easily, but I am curious if there is anything I can do to safeguard it from spreading any further.

Is there some sort of fiberglass bonding that I could easily brush on to brace it?  Perhaps another finish?

Not a huge deal, just trying to prolong the life of this otherwise nice-looking stock.

I have one that is doing the same thing.  Perhaps some kevlar cloth and epoxy?
