Today, I purchased a rifle.  It is an A1 small hole upper.  Correct in every way, on an Essential Arms lower.

I paid $550 for this gun.

How is the EA lower as far as retro goes?

Well, the first thing everyone here is going to start screaming is "Got Photos?"

I'd say that you did pretty good. Where are you going to get any kind of AR15 for $550?!?

The EA lower is fine by me but there are those that don't care for them because many of them are cast. Well, so are Ruger guns and they've sold millions! Nothing wrong with cast receivers though the magazine release button fence is non-traditional. Other than that it is fine.

Now get some pictures up!

Actually, the newer EA lowers are forged from what I understand. I'm about to buy one. The older ones are cast, but should be fine. (SCREAMS FOR PICS!) I'm sure someone here could tell you if we could see it. Congratulations! I mean, it sounds like a much nicer gun that an Oly plinker. $550 is a good deal!

It is an older EA receiver.  That, I'm sure of.  It seems to have some A1 type features.

I'm building one right now in that range.

130 for the Mega lower, with lpk installed.
125 for the Mega flat top upper, assembled.
Bushy Barrel, forestock, gas tube, front sight, FH, 240
Stock 40
Still looking for the BCG, but it won't be much.

Killed all that by throwing an Eotech on top
