Well, now that you've put marks on your barrel by mounting the thing ( I did too But yeah, it's a nice piece to have in the collection. |
I'm not too worried about marking the barrel. My guns are for shooting and I don't mind a gun having a bit of normal use wear. Also, I know that point of impact changes with this type of bi pod so it won't get used much at all. Does anybody have any clue as to the purpose of the pockets on the carrier? The guy that I bought this from also had another 5 bi pods in the nylon carrying case. He wanted $10.00 for the nylon cased ones, maybe I should have picked up one of these also but, when I saw this one in the canvas case I knew it was older and the fact that it said Colt on it closed the deal. He also had 6 M16A1 uppers with triangle hand guards without bolt, bolt carrier, and charging handle in "issued condition" but, they were all marked under $200.00. If I'd only had another $1000.00 to spend....... He did tell me he'd be at another show later in the year. I think I can see the beginning of an XM177E1 project about the first of the year if I can find him again.Doc |
The snapped flap is for the cleaning rod. The correct cleaning rod is the M11E2 which is very similar to the current five piece rod except it is a three piece rod. The most intresting thing is the only way the rod will fit is with the "T" handle open(not folded down) I'm told there are photos of GIs carrying this case with the cleaning rod open like I described. |

Thanks KurtVF, now I have to start looking for the correct cleaning rod kit to fit. I thought that's what that pocket was for. I tried my current cleaning kit and it was going to be a pretty tight fit to get all the rod pieces in so, I gave up before I got them all in and stuck. I'm guessing that the front zippered pocket is for the rest of the cleaning kit, bore brushs, patches, etc. Doc |
You are correct about the rest of the stuff being kept in the zippered compartment. The early cleaning rods are pretty hard to find. |
Due to the fact that the bi pod mounts to the barrel and the barrel is fairly light weight it is possible to actually bend the barrel ever so slightly but, enough to change the point of impact. That's why a "free floating barrel/hand guard" is the hot setup for precision shooting. The bi pod on a free floater never touches the barrel because it mounts to the hand guard. I don't suppose in Viet Nam it would have made much difference considering the close proximity of the targets. Doc |
I am the other guy. I would not have went that high had it not been a Colt Marked bi pod. It will go well with my Colt Armalite marked bi pod that I bought at the last gun show I got to go to back in July which I paid $5 for |
Well I'm glad it went to someone deserving a break every once in awhile God Bless and take care over there in the sandbox!! ETA: Nice find with the Colt/Armalite one!!!! ETA2: Sharpshooter, did you buy that upper on the EE from t-money with or without the repro 01 charging handle? |
| Yes I bought the repro retro upper with the TS CH and the tri point. I figure since I am not lucky enough to find a real, model 601 upper for $250 complete with all the parts. I guess I had better buy the closest thing I could get to it. I may swap out the DPMS upper for a colt unit I have lying around when I get home. I do not know yet. |
