was taking some pics of the SP1, serial number 108XX and noticed the buffer



could it have been replaced, I thought they were discontinued in 66, this is a 67/68 rifle,

That is what I would expect from that vintage.

Colt used up quite a few older parts on the SP1 series.

Roger on that.

My very first AR, bought in 1972, had an Edgewater buffer.  Which I promply replaced w/the "new improved" style, and threw away.

Who the heck expected them to be worth money 30 years later

How much did you pay? About $200? I looked at one in '73 and it was about that much.

When I finally got around to buying my SP1 years later it was just over twice that amount.
