A friend of mine has a SP1 (5 digit 54XXX) with an attached 4X20 Colt Scope that I'm getting ready to buy. I couldn't find much about the scopes. Are they good scopes?

yes,
i've had one for years, and a similar scope for an ar-18, and have had no problems

only drawbacks i see are the height, (need to stretch, or use a pad on the stock) and the crosshairs are thick, (but that only depends on what you are aiming at!)

These Colt scopes are very well made. Great quality with great glass and all....but I've always found them to be like looking through a soda straw.

When I bought my SP1 in 79 I almost bought one at the same time, for $99. Looked through it and declined. I've looked at them every time I see them at gunshows and still can't talk myself into buying one, despite the great quality.

More questions!

Anyone have info on what years they were made?

Would it be right for a Retro?

How does the Drop Compensator work?

Is there an online manual somewhere?

I wasn't impressed with this 4X20 on his SP1, but maybe I'm spoiled by modern scopes.

Thanks for any help

Were the Colt scopes made in Japan or the US?

Both Armalite and Colt had their optics made in Japan by Hakko.  Hakko is a commonly found vendor for several companies.
