what is the best round 5.56 wise for home defense out of a 10.5 barrel
|
|
I'd go with 50 or 55 gr Black Hills TSX
or what this guy posted... never tried it though: |

You might want to take a look at what iNeXile556 recommended, the Hornady 556 75GR SBR TAP. It's supposed to be designed for use in shorter barrels. Not sure of the muzzle velocity, but no muzzle flash/fireball from my AR pistol during an evening shoot firing from a 10.5 inch barrel with a KVP linear comp. Especially compared to M193 and M885, which were quite spectacular and eliminated the need for a weapons light Pete |

The professional recommendation is 70 gr OTM as used in the Mk262.
"HD" for the purposes of actual security means what you do to the house and it's outer defenses, not what last ditch firearm you run to grab when it all fails. At that point I want whatever it takes to penetrate and hit whoever is coming in against my will. Stopping them as fast and completely as possible prevents an exchange of gunfire where the opponent's choice in ammo wasn't based on how it would be "safer" shooting indoors. At the point they start shooting back they are trying to stop me - so no quarter is given. Once the SWAT team shows up the house will be made swiss cheese engaging the intruders in it. If the outer defenses didn't keep them in the yard it's too late. "HD" ammo is a search for failure. |

Black Hills 75gr HP Blue box ![]() Any clue of the fps out of a 10.5" barrel? Thanks About 300-325 less than from 16" barrel, same with any load. - OS Thank you much! I trust ya do realize that doesn't tell all that much unless you know what the velocity is from the 16" barrel, which is hardly ever the stated velocity from the manufacturer, which generally uses undocumented specs to arrive at that figure (which my 16" barrels never achieve). I can only confidently state that figure by the chrono tests I've done on various loads between my 16" and 10.5" ARs. - OS |

Not available to the public, from what I can find. Looked at the velocities, energies, gelatins, etc... I don't think it's a good option for home defense. Penatrates a lot more, even at a decent velocity loss. This is supposed to be where 300 BO is supposed to shinel, so maybe an option if the only purpose for that gun is home defense. |
| I picked up some 75 Grain TAP Precision from Buds. The downside is you need a qualified professional account to order it. If I recall this is an older version of the 75 Grain Tap ammo, but it is supposed to be useful for SBRs. I'll see how bad the muzzle flash is out of my 10.5" upper when I get the chance. |
|
Just came back from the range. 75 Grain TAP was not bad at all. I fired it from a 10.5" barrel with a BRT Linear Comp.
I have a video with a few rounds of the 75 grain tap VS standard 55 grain american eagle 5.56 nato. The 75 grain tap muzzle flash looked no worse than shooting from a 16 inch barrel. Concussion/noise wasn't bad at all either. |

American Eagle 55 Grain FMJ
Hornady 75 Grain TAP Those videos I mentioned. Sorry I had the light on for the 75 grain :/ Flash/Noise felt like a lot less. |

Flash is based on what extra chemical suppressant is blended in the powder and a lot of the more expensive ammo uses it; MK262 has a lot and it was also tweaked to hot soak better in a gun running multiple magazines. While some LEO ammo doesn't seem available, Black Hills IS, along with a very competitive import - IMI Razor Core.
After that it's a matter of lighting and what muzzle device used. I have a BRT Covert and can't see any flash yet. |

But I was pleased with how it ran in a 10.5". The 77 grain is supposed to be even better, but I haven't been able to get it for a decent price. Unburned powder is definitely minimized with what ever formula they used. I need to look into razor core. |
