Okay, here's my weird issue for the day:

I built my AR pistol this summer. Function tested it a couple times, but hadn't actually sighted it in. First time out some guys at work were testing it to see what the flash can did and ran a few mags through it with no issues. Federal ball ammo. We later tested it at night to see what the muzzle flash was like with the same Federal Ball and then some Hornady TAP I believe it was. So maybe 100 or so rounds through it altogether with no issues. This would have been temps in the high 70's or low 80's down to maybe 60 - 65 degrees.

Today I go our for actual sight in and the gun only fires one round, ejects the shell but doesn't pick up the next round. We tried multiple mags and 3 different types of ammo. Temps were in teh mid to high 30's, may have crept up to 40 or so.

Could temperature be an issue?

If so, what can I do to correct that?

If not temp, any idea what it could be?

here's my parts build data/list:

CMMG Lower parts kit with Spikes Battle Trigger
Daniel Defense A3 Upper
PSA Premium Bolt Carrier Group
VooDoo Ultralight 11.5" 1-7 Melonite coated barrel
Carbine length gas tube and low profile gas block

Magpul MOE K Grip
KAK pistol Buffer with spacer

Not being a nag but did you clean and oil it after you shot it the first time? Scrub the chamber with a chamber brush and solvent, lightly oil the chamber and bore. I like to soak the bolt and carrier with oil. They run better wet in my experience, try that.

I honestly didn't give it a good cleaning, just a quicky wipe down of the carrier and bolt and re-oil.

With that said, I certainly hope it isn't that finicky. My other AR's (I have 5) go many hundreds of rounds at least and multiple range sessions between cleanings and keep on chugging along just fine. It won't hurt to give it a try obviously but if I need to clean it every hundred rounds then it probably isn't the pistol for me

Try a Spikes ST-T2 buffer -- Just curious here but why a Carbine length gas port on an 11.5" barrel?
Would have thought you'd go with a Pistol length gas port on a short barrel.
My 10.5 5.56 and 300BLK are Pistol length gas ports and they run fine with any ammo I feed 'em - Hot - Cold - even Suppressed.
The 5.56 doesn't like the steel case ammo when it's 80+ degrees out is the only issue I have had.

Check gas block and gas key to see if either loosened up?

How far was the ejected brass going?

I'd check the gas block first...

I'm with you if it wont run over a 100 without a deep cleaning it has real issues.

Honestly I didn't think too much about the gas tube length at the time. This is my first pistol build and that length was what the barrel was set up for. I thought that was pretty much the norm unless you ran the shorter 7 inch range barrels??

I was wondering about the buffer weight or spring. I'm wracking my brain trying to remember what I put in there. I want to say its a regular carbine buffer and spring. I took a look and its unmarked.

Is it possible that the temps were an issue though? Can't figure out otherwise why it ran fine before and not now. I get the cleaning issue but I really doubt an approx 100 rounds created enough fouling to cause it not cycle fully.

Either way, I want to make sure she runs right all the time.

Brass ejection looked okay. I only ended up firing maybe 15 or so rounds since it wasn't cycling right. About 5 rounds of each load but it seemed like they were ejecting okay. I'm guessing though that the bolt isn't being driven to teh rear quite far enough to pick up the next round in the mag.

I will pull my rail and make sure the gas block is secure. It's getting soem gas since its blowing the bolt back at least most of the way, but it could be something up there.

I did check the gas key at the range, but will need to check the block.

Carbine length gas system is normal for 10.5 and 11.5" barrels.  I've only ever seen pistol on 7.5" and less.  I would check your gas block and make sure it didn't get loose or move. Spray some CLP or other oil on the BCG and run it wet too
