If I build a pistol from a reciever thats never been assembled as a Rifle can the pistol have an overall length greater than 26 inches?

Thanks
The reason I asked the question is that as I add up the lengths of a buffer (7.5"), the reciever (7.75") and the then barrel I'm getting over 26 unless I use a 7.5 inch barrel. Right now I have a barrel that I'm planning to shorten but I'd like to minimize the labor involved. I'd also like to avoid using a 7.5 inch barrel if I can. I have an extra M4 barrel I can easily shorten and re-thread and I'd prefer to use that. |

The answers you have gotten so far are correct as those gentlemen usually are. But they refer to federal law. Be sure you also meet any requirements of state/municipal law as well. Some states have "maximum" barrel lengths and/or OAL for pistols, etc. True, OP is in Texas, and in most states, the OAL max for pistols usually only applies to CCW's. |

Thanks again, My interpretation of the documentation from ATF was as you guys have explained it but I wanted to be sure - I see a lot of pics in some threads that seem to show 26+in pistols and I wasn't sure if thats what I was seeing or if they were being achieved in some way I didn't understand. |

You can't just measure the individual parts and add them up to get an accurate OAL. |
