I took a standard Mil-spec six position carbine buffer tube, used a dremel w/ cut off wheel to remove the bottom lug, then used belt sander to smooth the tube, I'm still using it on one of my 300 Blk pistols. If you could see under the foam cover, its nice and silver, I didn't bother to paint the tube, http://i421.photobucket.com/albums/pp296/tsk5408/PICT0007A.jpg Thats what I did on my pistol build I have going now. I used a commercial spec for the bigger diameter and foam bike grips off amazon. I ground mine down with a 4" angle grinder though and finished it with a flapper then hand sanded it some and painted it.
