Just finished a build and went to test fire it and sight it in. While it wasn't a total disaster, it's far from "optimal". It seems to be under gassed but I wanted your alls opinion. It would fire each round and the bolt carrier would move back but not enough to lock back on an empty mag and not enough to feed next round on non-empty mags for most of the ammo brands. I shot MFS FMJ 55gr zinc plated steel, WPA  FMJ 55gr, and some of that South African M1A3 ball stuff. The MFS did the worst. It would fire but not eject the empty case. The WPA would fire, eject the empty case but not feed next round or lock open bcg on empty mag. The M1A3 would fire, eject brass, feed next round every time but not lock back bcg on empty mag.

Here's my rig:
Blackhole Weaponry 10.5" polygonal barrel, carbine length gas, with Troy claymore brake.
Syrac adjustable gas block
Ar-15 semi auto bcg
Palmetto pistol buffer tube with H buffer and 11" spring (39 coils)

The gas block was run wide open. The gas key is firmly staked with no signs of gas leaks around key or gas block. Pistol was perfectly clean and very well lubed. Still, wouldn't you all agree that this is obviously an under gassed scenario? So I'm thinking of trying a lighter weight buffer. What say the hive? I figured one possible solution would be to just run better ammo but I'd prefer a system that could at least run WPA. I just cant imagine M1A3 isn't high enough pressure and quality to be adequate.
What's your alls ideas?

It might just need a little break in.

Try running some 62gr stuff through it...it always seems to be a bit hotter. Then retry with the ammo previously used.

The gas block is lined up with the gas port in the barrel, right?

I have a similar barrel on the way from Black Hole...I hope it's not a barrel problem.

It could be the buffer...but I have never had any 5.56 AR15 that gave a woop what buffer was in it.

Yeah, gas port is aligned correctly. I had BHW dimple the barrel for the set screws to make sure it was right. I'll try some heavier grain ammo and a lighter buffer. Can't hurt. Also forgot to mention I tried two different pmags and a lancer awf mag. All three brand new.
Just to make sure, there is no reason a heavier M-16 bcg would work better right? Seems to me less weight is the way to go.
Man, I hope I can get this thing to eat crap ammo. This was gonna be an all out abuse gun.

always use M855 ammo to work thru any issues,
then you have a standard to work from and that way there is a good
reference point and it allows you to go step-by-step

if you want a .pdf of my troubleshoting flow charts (they are much easier to read)
just PM me a email address & I will send both the piston and the D.I. version
