So I had a ar a few years back, it was a stag 16" m4 bArrell, flat top w/ acog.  Loved it, and if zombies attacked I will really miss it.  I had no practical use for it though.
I'm in the market to upgrade my g35 with crimson grips and light for hd.

I've stocked up on some tools and I'm ready to build my first ar pistol.
I'm thinking of a flat top upper 7" barell 7" free float tube(like viking tactical) and the flaming pig to top it off

So here comes the questions
Where to get a bArrell?  I can install but can't be a blank ( I don't have a machine shop)
Where's a good deal on pistol lowers?
How about buffer tubes, I was thinking about a piston set up but I think the tube would help eye alignment with sights.    I like the paracord mod so I'll probably go with that.

Any help would be great. New to ar pistols and building so excuse any of my ignorance in this area.

Fighting zombies seems a practical enough reason to own a 16" AR.

You mean upgrade from your G35 to an AR pistol? They are both well suited for HD honestly so not an upgrade IMHO, but hey, you can never have too many firearms.

Armorers wrench, vice and vice blocks are a must.

Very cool, I like fully shrouded barrels. Less space to burn your hand on it. Ask me how I know.
So here comes the questions

I got my 7.5inch barrel from JSE surplus complete with front sight. If you have a dremmel you could grind it down and it'd fit under the handguard of your choice. You may have to remove the gas block to install a free float tube so be sure you have the hammer, vice, blocks and muscle you need to make that happen.
Where's a good deal on pistol lowers?
I just wrote the word "PISTOL" in sharpie on the side to remind myself just in case to not install a stock on this lower. Any lower will do.  You don't need a "pistol only" marked lower (though I marked mine)
How about buffer tubes, I was thinking about a piston set up but I think the tube would help eye alignment with sights.    I like the paracord mod so I'll probably go with that.
A "piston setup" still uses a receiver extension just like direct impingement does so I'm not sure what you're talking about here. I can highly recommend a RRA pistol buffer tube. I couldn't get the paracord to stay put so I got the rubber sleeve.
Any help would be great. New to ar pistols and building so excuse any of my ignorance in this area.

Therealcarbine15 covered a lot of what I was going to say. I also went with a 7.5" barrel from JSE. I got the DPMS chrome lined barrel. JSE also has complete uppers for a decent price if you wanted to get one complete already. Look around on the net, there are a lot of options out there.

I also went with the RRA buffer tube because I liked the look and feel of them. As therealcarbine15 said, any stripped AR lower that has never been assembled into a rifle will do the job. I however went with a Double Star pistol marked lower just because I know a cop who thinks they need to be marked "pistol" (if there's one, I'm sure there's more). JSE has them for $125.

I was going to go with the KX3 flaming pig, but got a linear comp because it was a lot cheaper. I got mine recently from eBay seller darkmetal-design. It also appears to be more compact than the KX3 (which I like). I'm yet to shoot it with the linear comp on, so I can't tell you how well it works (after this weekend I will).

If I had to build this pistol again, I would probably go with the 7.5" barrel and a carbine free float handguard (I really like the looks of that). I probably would had done this in 7.62x39 too.

Ya the carbine length handgaurd would help a little with Burt hands, I wonder if a 8" would cover the pig?
I didn't know that about receivers that's why I couldn't find pistol only recievers.

My wife even wants a ar pistol now so looks like I'm gonna build on in 9mm too.  Humm wonder if paracord comes in pink? Haha
For her's I'm thinking a free float quad rail, carbine length quad rail with pink ladderbars pink houge pistol grip and some pink paracord tied around the buffertube I'll just buy a complete upper though. B

Why 7.62? Wouldn't you be better off with a drako?

I used a Yankee hill machine Carbine Length Customizable Free Float AR-15 Forearm System with a 7.5 barrel from JES.
I also used a levang comp with the YHM end cap. Spikes pistol tube and buffer kit.

That thing is beautiful!  Can you put a front sight on that freefloating rail?   I was thinking a tube with a monolithic rail on top for that reason.
I picked up 3 stripped lowers today.  I'm really questioning wether not I should make both pistols 9mm instead of 1 9mm and 1 223.
Mine will be a hd weapon, and the flash grenade comment from a past post made me think.

How do you like the levang comp?

for a great cover for the RRA buffer tube get this (if you don't do the paracord wrap that is).

Hell get one anyway, they are well worth the money and great as a backup in case you come unraveled.

The levang comp is nice. It directs gas / flame down range.

I have replace my pictured rubber cover with a leather cover from "Stitcher" (member here)
The rubber cover pulled on my beard on recoil. Not comfortable after about 100 rounds

That's an expensive stock you have there!  Damn it makes me want to go through the hoops to get one too.  You like the levang comp? Looks good on the end there though.   Seems like a trend here.

I like the Levang. I had a Noveske Pig. It did the job and looked very cool. But it weighs 1/2 lb. and adds 3" to the over all length.
The Levang is lite weight, shorter, does a good job of sending the blast down range, and is lots cheaper.

Sorry, wrong picture:
Here is the Pistol

You can buy a fully assembled upper direct from many different manufacturers. I bought mine from Model 1 Sales. With the upper came a lower parts kit. They ship it right to your home via UPS. Below shows a basic 7.5" upper with a low profile gas block and a carbine length quad rail.

Now all you need is a 'stripped lower receiver'. I bought mine from Spike's Tactical, but you can pick one up at your local gun shop for approx $130.00

Once you have the fully assembled upper and the stripped lower ... all you have to do is install the parts from the 'lower parts kit', slap the upper onto the lower, insert two pins and you're done!

Now you can deck it out with whatever you want like flip sights, red dot sight, etc...

YHM front rail mounted flip sight and an A.R.M.S. low profile rear flip sight.

Where's a good deal on pistol lowers?

You can use a any lower that hasn't had a buttstock attached and hasn't been used as a carbine or rifle.
