How are the endplates attached to the rear of the reciever on AR pistols? Carbine buffer tubes have the exterior castle nut to hold the endplates in place; what holds them in place on Pistol tubes?

Most are made like a rifle tube. There is a shoulder on the tube and it is simply screwed in until it is seated. The plate is held in place against the receiver by this same shoulder.

RRA pistol tubes have a larger overall outside diameter and this in effect forms the same shoulder, and also makes it not being able to accept a stock.

Ahh, I see. In fact, I wanted to replace my tube with a Rock River one, and at the same time install a DD endplate, the one that accepts QD swivels. The thing is, the DD plate looks thicker than standard, and I wonder if the RR tube will screw in far enough:

To use an endplate like that you would also have to remove the indexing tab in order to screw the tube down.  I also believe that the thickness would be an issue in this case.

I wanted to use an Ace buffer tube with an IKICKHIPPIES end plate (which is thick + index tab must be ground down), but the tube wouldn't thread in far enough. Then I tried an RRA tube, but it went in too far. Solution so far is to trim a slight slot in the RRA to allow the buffer retaining pin to stick up. Inelegant, but functional/ I couldn't find a shim washer. I'll GunKote (or otherwise refinish) the end plate.

That end plate looks like standard thickness but as mentioned you'll have to grind off the nub. Any end plate you buy for a pistol will come ground off the same way you'll be doing it so no worries. Just don't buy an end plate that's super thick like this and you'll be fine.

Get the Noveske end plate, as it is the standard thickness as is the Magpul ASAP.  Thickness matters with the RRA tube.

I just checked, and the Noveske has the tab too. Plus, they are Out Of Stock.

Are you doing a 22lr or another caliber?

As I mentioned before, doesn't matter about the tab. Either way you'll have to remove it or the company you buy it from will. The one you had pictured before will work fine.

Not shure about the DD plate but the I Kick Hippies works like a champ, just ground the tab a little bit and GTG.

If you use the Spikes Pistol Tube you can use any of the sling plates, it is made and installs just like a normal Carbine buffer tube with castle nut etc.

And yeah the Hippie plate works great with it, no mods required.

What's the end of the Spike's tube look like? I wanted to use the RR because it is slightly rounded.

It is basically flat but with a nice radius perimeter edge, much better for transferring recoil than a round ball type end, those tend to dig in more IMHO.
