Building my first pistol.

I ordered the buffer kit from Ace last night and they emailed today that it has shipped.

One question, how is the detent spring for the rear pin retained?   Their picture isn't very clear about showing this.

Thanks.

The ones I have seen have a split "collar" that clamps onto the tube and fits into the recess in the lower to keep the tube from spinning. Some also have a means for attaching a sling. I am not sure if the collar part is extra or not.

These "collars" hold the detent spring in just like the metal plate on the collapsable stock/tube set up.

YMMV

Shrikefan is right. The pistol tube is threaded just enough to screw in to the lower to catch the buffer retaining plunger. Then the thick collar, which indexes with the notch in the lower under the buffer tube threads, slides down the tube as you press in the detent spring. Then you tighten the collar  and that stops the tube from rotating back out and keeps the spring in place.  The collar has holes on either side to attach sling mounts, which may, or may not be included depending on the options you ordered. Then you slide the foam tube on. It's very quick and simple.

Do you mind if I ask which kit you got, and how much it set you back (after tax, S&H, etc)?

$0....

Came home to an email today that says they are out of stock.   I guess it was their automated system that said it was shipped.

Need to find something else I guess.  RB Precision is out of them also.

I run a entry stock tube from RRA and i also have a ambi sling plate between the lip on the tube and the receiver. The tube wont screw in far enough to catch the buffer detent with this setup but it dont effect the function of the gun. The only thing you have to watch out when you open up for disassembly. the buffer wants to rocket out! I have 3 built this way. I didnt waste the $ on a expensive clamp, I spent it on ammo!!!!!

This seems like a good way to go.

I looked on RRA's site.   Is there some way to order the buffer tube/spring/buffer without ordering the buttstock?

PK Firearms has a great pistol kit that includes all you need from buffer tube, spring, buffer, plate etc.
My personal favorite setup is using a rifle length buffer tube (Ace has them) with the rifle buffer, spring, and foam tube. To hold it all together you can purchase a gusset from ACE which is a collar that slips around the tube and which holds the take down pin detent in place. You need to call them to order the gusset as an individual item. The rifle length tube has big advantages over the shorter tube especially if you are a bigger guy.

esbfan,

Thanks for the lead.  Some searching turned up the kit at PK Firearms and I will probably order it if they have it in stock.

For the short term I think I'll use the rifle buffer tube I already own.   The lower should be at my dealer today and the LPK should be here tomorrow.

I am actually building the pistol so I can pickup my 11 1/2" barrel and have a  'home' for it until my Form 1 for my SBR shows up.     That will keep me legal and give me a chance to test out the upper I am building and work out any bugs before I get my stamp.

Yes, I have 2 with the PK setup also. They wern't making them when i built my first pistols. The PK has a longer lip so you can use an ambi plate and the buffer retainer pin also. The PK unit also dont have a hole in the end so you cant screw a buttstock on the tube. If you send me your e-mail address i will send you some video of the function of my stuff.

MOS,

Can that be found online or must you ask about it?

I have a rifle buffer.

My plan was to build with that this weekend to get it put together, then order the kit from PK Firearms and swap it out later.

That picture makes it look like my rifle butter might be the way to go.  It will be longer (I am a 'bigger' person) and probably less expensive.

Thanks.

Mos, is that the gusset from Ace?

Yes. It's the ACE Gusset.

I had to ask for them since they're were not in the riflestocks.com site.

I thought it looked kind of cool mounting 2 or 3 at a time.

Once you know what you're looking for, they are all over the site.  As part of the various buttstock kits.

It makes sense that they would sell them separately.

In the end I ordered a kit from PK Firearms.   I needed a charging handle and a couple of other small parts.  It was just easier to order it all from them.

I doubt it will be here by this weekend so I'll build with the rifle buffer and just have to leave the detent and spring out until my order shows up.
