Considering building or buying an AR Pistol for a change of pace while varmint hunting. Currently shooting a Bushmaster Varminteer and a Model 70 .243SSM. Shooting prairie dogs at 100 yards with either eventually gets boring. Wanting to know what to expect in accuracy from an AR pistol. I understand there are many variables, but just trying to determine if AR pistols typically can hold 1”, 2”, etc. groups @ 100yds.

With a bipod and quality ammo 2moa is do-able

Could a bipod be considered a vertical forward grip? Just wondering since I live in the communist state of NY.

Smith and Wesson sells their SW500's and 460's with bipods installed from the factory.

Im also considering an AR pistol for my next gun. I was wondering how accurate one might be with a 10.5 or 11.5" barrel... I've seen how horribley un-accurate a 7" barrel is and that's got me uneasy about AR pistols. Any info would be most appreciated

My CMMG 7.3" pistol shot 1" groups pretty easy @ 50 yards with 75 gr TAP.  Plan to go back and shoot at 100 yards when time permits..if this thread is still going strong, I'll post my results with some pics.

This with a red dot 1X optic....and a NON target trigger!  YUCK is this trigger heavy!  Used to my RRA 2 stage!

The length of the barrel has no real difference (IMO) on groups.  It affects sight radius if you are using iron, and velocity either way.  I've got a group of about 1/2 to 2/3 of an inch I shot w/ a 11.5 upper w/ a Tasco red dot at 100 yards.  Most of the time I get groups in the 2 - 4 range w/ ball ammo which is consistent w/ non-magnified optics & ball ammo out of my rifles.  I put my 7.5" upper on my SBR w/ a 6 - 18 scope & was shooting 1" groups w/ cheap commercial reloads.

my 7 1/2 one does roughly 4" at 100 with out trying too hard and with open sights. I ALWAYS use sandbags, bipods are good but not near as good as sandbags. I agree with jhereg, the barrel length shouldnt have anything to do with it. I had 2 Ruger super redhawk 44 mags. one 7 1/2" barrel and one 10". the shorter one out shot the 10 so bad there wasnt a chance. but other than that, if you can hold a short barrel still, it will do as well as a longer one. many dissagree but oh well. i have tested it, it is true. barrel length means nothing in accuracy.

Umm, did you really just say that...? I'm not gonna get into it but I'm pretty sure barrel length has a lot to do with accuracy. That's why pistols don't hold sub moa groups

It's essentially true.  Barrel length affects sight radius, so it can affect accuracy w/ iron.  If you are using optics barrel length generally won't have much effect on accuracy, and some people think a shorter heavier barrel has the potential to be more accurate, but I have not seen that.  Why would a longer barrel be more accurate than a short one if you are not using iron?
