On the Application to Make and Register a Firearm under Question 4 i. "State why you intend to make firearm." What's the standard answer that most people put in that space? I can think of a couple of answers that might not necessarily be Politically Correct but I would like to get this approved so what should I put? Thanks. |

I'm pretty sure you don't need to pay the $200 tax to make a single firearm for personal use and to have it on the NFA list. Unless it’s a NFA item... If you’re buying a stripped lower to build as an AR pistol just buy a Pistol lower if your state is all picky and build away. If you’re milling your own lower out, you should be good to go as you’re allowed to make a firearm for your own personal use, but you can’t sell the lower. Also you can write the BATF on the subject if you want to know more. (They like it when people ask questions, instead of just assuming) Also, I have to assume your just wanting to build an AR pistol, and if that’s true you might want to read some more on the subject before you start, lots of info in the stickys in this forum. It’s a fine line and you need to know what’s allowed and what’s not when you start. (Like no stock and no forgrip) And maybe the answer to your question would be: Personal use. |

Thanks for your comments and suggestions Gibbles. I thought about building a pistol but I want to build a short barrel rifle (SBR) for no other reason than I want to own one. Maybe the pistol later on. So with that little bit of information that I shouldn't have left out on the original post....so do you think I could get by with just a simple "For personal use" as my answer? That's a nicer answer than what I wanted to list, that's for sure. |
