I flipped a mental coin between this and the reloading forum and this forum won.

I'll be popping together a M&A kit (7" @ 1:9) and was really thinking of functional gas problems getting the pistol to cycle properly and whether I should be custom loading rounds as opposed to OTS ammo. I can't seem to google anything about this subject so maybe I'm creating a problem before I've even had a chance to try it at the range. Information on the upper is sketchy at best and I haven't assumed that the buffer, port diameter, etc. has been reconfigued for only 7" of gas expansion. I hope this made sense.

Thanks in advance.

.... and yes, yes, yes I'll post pics when it's done but it's just a flattop, no biggie.

Re: 7" 1:9" twist Pistol-  EDITED

1). Don't worry about which loads to use until you get the gun built.

2). Try commercial 55gr. loads first to check functionality.

3). What is the purpose of this pistol?\
-- Fun range toy, or something defensive?

If 3). is range-toy, then use whatever you like.  A 7" 1:9 bbl. isn't likely to do well past 50 yards with anything heavier than 55gr. anyway.

If 3). is defence -- bad news: a 1:9" twist 7" bbl. isn't going to fragment anything reliably, if ever past 50 yards.  You'll just be putting holes in the target. Granted, if the target is very small, this may be all that is necessary to kill it humanely, but, it may not be, especially past 50 yards.  Soft Points or reliably expanding Hollow Points or even Frangibles may be good small varmint rounds.

Within 20 yards, even 55gr FMJ stands a reasonable chance of limited fragmentation within the first few inches of two-legger tissue.
