Santa gave me a gift card to Midwayusa and I am considering build the 12.7x42 ar. They have the barrel with the bolt. My question is, has anyone built one of these and how does it do? I handload so ammo is not an issue. Also, I know I need the enlarged ejection port and the bolt is the 7.62x39 one if the bolt that comes with it does not perform in a standard bolt carrier. Also, standard mags might need some mods.

Anything else I am overlooking? I would build a regular AR but I have enough of them (for now).

The required bolt is not just a standard 7.62x39 bolt.  I was an early adopter and can remember people having issues going that route

That is correct. I have the same barrel and bolt. They are Liberty Barrels, I am not sure who is supplying the bolts. I made some measurments on the bolt compared to my 6.5 Alexander Grendal and dimention wise it is the same as the 6.5 grendel.

I know the diameter of the bolt face may be the same at the 7.62x39 but I belive the dept is different. I measured both bolt face depths at .136" vs .125" on. Lot of 7.62x39.

As far as uppers go......

Satern has pre enlarged uppers for sale, stripped for about 125 bucks. They are machined prior to annodizing. As far as a standard upper you can enlarge the port on a mill or dremel it.

I went a different route. I have been wanting to build a side charger so I ordered the Mega side charing upper from Ranier. The port should be large enough to work. I will use a regular bolt and charging handle until I can get a side charging bolt. They were on sale so less money then the satern upper.

I am also an H2 buffer. Actually going to be using my Grendel lower until I can get a nice Billet lower built for it.

I have the 16" from midway. I used a carrier and parts from an AimSurplus nitrided BCG. Works fine. For an upper receiver, aeroPrecision made .458socom marked uppers at one point that had enlarged ports. I believe you could use the Vltor pistol upper receiver as it has large ports and also I believe QC10 and New frontier armory make similar products.

What makes me mad is that Alexander Arms won't sell parts. The only thing you can buy separate is the bolt. They make you buy an entire upper.

Mine started out as a AA 12" upper. But I ended up switching to a BCM upper that I  widened the port door myself on my mill. It was very easy. Then the barrel got chopped down to 10.5", I turned the gas block diameter down to .875", enlarged the gas port to .125", and had it Nitride coated.
