I came across a mostly Aero build in a trade.  M5 Upper and Lower, DPMS SASS barrel, and Aero Rail. The build was without furniture or BCG. I purchased a Aero Nickle Boron BCG and Furniture.

So far it has about 200 rounds through it. I fired the first 100 in brass only. Went to steel case just to check (Tula) and it worked fine. Tried Monarch yesterday and had a lot of malfunctions (50%). In almost every case the rifle would fire a round, fired casing would lodge lengthwise in the ejection port with the case mouth being jammed in the port and the rim against the bolt. Went back to brass and problems stopped.

I did not notice an impulse difference between the Tula and Monarch. Monarch is lacquered case, so that's my suspicion at this point.  Steel would likely only be about 25% of this rifle's diet going forward, and while if it takes brass case only to keep it running, it would be nice to know why some steel chokes it up.

Any help would be appreciated

Some steel ammo chokes up because it's junk. I never shoot this crap in my rifles and you'll read more complaints regarding malfunctions involving steel cased ammo than from any other reason.

If you want to save money and get excellent ammo take up reloading. I can make match grade ammo for my .308's for around $12.00 a box. It's every bit as accurate as Federal 168 grain Gold Medal Match that sells for over $30.00 a box.

I reload for .223 currently and have some .308 dies on order. I just find it nice to have a rifle that works with cheap stuff, because sometimes that's all you can get.

I'll run brass until the 500 round mark and then try again

Monarch steel ammo is Barnaul from Russia.
Monarch brass is Privil Partisan from Serbia.

The steel stuff doesn't expand as much as brass, so you tend to have more fouling and less gas pressure than brass.
