I am looking to purchase a G2 soon, and I notice that the 16" models come with either a carbine melonited 4150, or a midlength stainless 416r version in the case of the Recon model.

Seeing as there are no aftermarket barrels available, would the stainless barrel be worth the $250 increase in price? All other things would be equal, as I would be replacing the gas block and handguard either way.

This my first AR10, but I've always preferred midlength gas on my small frame ARs.

Thanks for the input guys!

Midlenght has system is worth it.  The recon is heavier though.  I would Spend the extra and get the recon.

I used a DPMS stainless barrel on my .338 Federal build and it is a real tack driver.  I think based on that alone I'd go stainless.

I couldn't be more pleased with my Recon G2. I did change out the hand guard to a full length one, and the gas block. I stayed with a non adjustable gas block and my rifle still runs like a champ with no issues. I've owned most of the other 308 semis and this one is the best of all, you will be pleased. Regards

Well I think that makes the recon an easy choice.  The only thing I'm really left on the fence about is whether or not it would be better to wait and see what the new Mega SF will actually sell for.  They say MSRP will be 2500, but with a Recon plus a new handguard and gas block is a little over 1500, the Maten may be getting close enough to be a viable alternative.  Why is gun buying so stressful?!

Don't forget, POF announced one as well, but AFAIK its not in the wild yet.

DPMS really needs to release the other calibers they've promised, they are going to lose market share to the others coming out with small frame guns.
