I just ordered this rifle: http://www.dpmsinc.com/308-ORACLE_ep_99-1.html

Now that it's been shipped, I see some comments in other threads about poor reliability in low-cost .308s.  That probably wouldn't have swayed me because this is the first rifle I found in my budget at about $750.  I've wanted a .308 for many years but wasn't willing to spend $1300+ to get one.

So, did I just waste my money?  Does anyone have experience with this or similar guns?  I'm not looking for an SHTF battle weapon; my interest is in hunting 4-legged creatures.  I'm 60+ and don't hunt much and won't be running around playing soldier.  I just need a reliable .308 that will, if I'm really lucky and have a lot of opportunity, get under 1000 rounds in my lifetime.  I chose .308 and the DPMS because it could do dual-duty, if required, and perhaps one day there will be great bargains on .308 military surplus as there used to be in military surplus 30-06.  Otherwise, I would have probably bought a 30-06.

Another question I have as a first-time .308 owner is optics.  What do you recommend for inexpensive optics that can take the recoil of such a gun.

Here is the optic I had on mine before I sold it. Nikon.
You did ok getting it. Works fine. A bit over gassed but works fine. Shot about 2000 rounds through mine before selling it. Had to decide between the oracle and the 12.5 inch barreled 308 I got. Oracle lost. I put a timney trigger in it as the 8 lb trigger sucked. The timney worked great or get a gold trigger. Both around 4 lbs. makes a difference. Also upgraded the hand guards with this, MI. that way you can add flashlight or other accessories. Enjoy it. You did fine.

Dad has one and it's been good to go. Put you a low profile has block and bout a 12-15" free float handgaurd and you have a great rifle for $1000.

Thanks, Bearcat.  I appreciate the link to the handguard.  That's one upgrade I want to do and your link is to the perfect option.

I got a LR- 308 for 650- swapped in a few parts for a poor mans oracle. Had to polish the chamber. But it runs reliably.

Put in a TMC trigger $150
Ambi safety $30
A larue grip $20
A magpul stock $44
Iron sights $80
An 6x optic $100
And polished the chamber $30 worth of carbide brushes.

The last thing I need is a better muzzle device.

I bought a Oracle to start with then customized it to my satisfaction It shoots less the 1/2MOA at 100yrd from a stock upper and lower. I free floated the barrel, put in a Timney 4lb trigger, PRS stock, and Vortex 5X15 Mil dot scope.   Here's a couple of targets at 100yrds and picture of the rifle.

I have owned two of them. The range I shoot at has steels out to 450. They were boring at that range. Never had reliability problems. However, I work on ARs and have not come across a problem that I was not able to take care of myself.

I have owned several .308 AR's over the last 15 years. I currently own this same rifle and BY FAR, it has been the most reliable. In fact, I have been shooting it quite a bit lately and I don't recall any malfunctions. The majority of my ammo is a variety of surplus and I have no issues. By the way, DPMS told me that .308 is ok to shoot, even though it is chambered 7.62. I recall some debate about this, at one time.

Before I bought it, I already planned several modifications. As soon as I got it, I immediately removed the barrel and sent it to ADCO for fluting. I installed Magpul MOE handguard, CTR stock, MIAD grip, YHM flip up gas block, Matech rear flip up, YHM muzzle brake/Adapter, and a Trijicon 1-4X24. (I have since changed the grip to Hogue and the handguard to the Magpul SL.)

The fluting helped with the weight and the YHM Muzzle brake helped with the recoil/muzzle rise. Not the best brake but I needed the YHM/QD for my suppressor.

Since I have the 1-4X24 scope, I never intended this to be a tack driver. However, some recent testing with subsonic ammo, resulted in sub moa accuracy at 105 meters. The subsonics are loaded with 175gr Sierra Match Kings. When I figured out my dope for the subsonics, (72 clicks up), I was pleasantly surprised with sub moa accuracy. Prior to this, I had only shot surplus ammo. Now that my interest has been piqued, I will be doing further testing with some better ammo.

If you are not planning on dialing the elevation up and down for different ammo or distances, you have several good options for inexpensive optics. Nikon, Burris, Weaver and ??.

Another note on reliability, using a sound suppressor really gets the bolt and chamber dirty. It even gets the ammo in the magazine cruddy. I have not had any reliability issues with the suppressor either.

"perhaps one day there will be great bargains on .308 military surplus as there used to be in military surplus 30-06"

Don't count on it - Clinton took care of that danger to us all.

Could work fine as is but count on getting either a Tubb's flatwire or Sprinco orange, KAK buffer, and perhaps a G2 extractor.

A heavy buffer, Tubbs spring and LaRue mbt made my Bushmaster lr308 more reliable and fun to shoot.

get an adjustable gas block, and run decent ammo in it and you will be fine.

EDIT: Then you'll want a free floated handguard, upgraded trigger, upgraded stock, and a nice optic.......
