I've often wondered the exact same thing.

There are lots of minor differences. You can't just whip together an 308 like you can a 556 rifle. Make sure you do your research before you order parts, or buy most of your parts from one source.

I think you'll find that no matter the road you take an AR10 will be a little on the heavy side...and expensive to build.  As above posters have said be sure to do your homework.  There are issues like 'high' and 'low' profile upper receivers.  There's also differences between the LAR308/DPMS format, the AR-10, and the SR-25.  That has do to with the barrel extension.  But if you go with the Mega, that follows the DPMS pattern.  They use standard AR15 trigger groups....probalby the more standard of the three in the civilian market.

Also, there will probably be a person or two to come by and mention the 6.5 Grendel cartridge.  It is used in the same platform as the AR15 and packs about the same whallop as a 308.  I hear it flies flatter and has less kick than the 308.  To the point where you can see the projectile hit the target.  I cant do that with my AR308.  I think reloading is needed to keep costs down though.  chec out the Variants forum.

Good luck.

Get a Windham .308 with the 15" free float rail. Only 7.5 lbs and just about same size as a Ar-15. Lifetime Warranty to boot. How can you beat it ?

Here's the sub-forum you seek and I'm pretty sure your thread will get moved here so, it's best to know now where it went.

AR Varients Sub-Forum

When I handled the Sig 716 at my LGS, it did feel a bit on the heavy side but, you have to keep in mind, the Sig is a piston rifle so, that adds weight to the already heavier platform. I've also handled the new DDV5 .308 and that rifle feels lighter than some of the AR15's I own.

I guess what it really boils down to is what you're willing to spend, what your intended uses will be, and whether or not a factory build will have all the features you want after all is said and done.

For me personally, I like to run my 308 gassers suppressed so, I went through a few variations till I found rifles that work both with and without a suppressor. From personal experience and from reports of friends that I've made here on the forums that went the build route, most of the time, they could not get their rifles to run suppressed reliably and in the end, ended up either selling what they had or just accepted the fact that they could not use that specific rifle suppressed.

I don't see you having that issue with the Sig since it's a piston design and those aren't as finicky but, just putting that info out if you end up building one and throwing a can on the end of it one day.

AR-10 = Armalite

No one else make an AR10 except for Armalite

You can usually buy a 308 pattern AR for less than you,can build the same rifle.

Someone was just asking the other day about a Larue vs LMT... If that is anywhere close to your budget then you should have no problem finding something already built that will shoot better than you. You can cut you budget almost by half in still walk with a SASS from armralite or DPMS... If you want to build, check out parts from CMMG maybe, you can build something in DPMS pattern and get all your parts from one source.
