Looking to purchase a 300 BLK out upper but don't know the utility or what is the best length to purchase. What is the utility difference between the 8.5 and the 10.5 inch barrel? Also with is the optimum length for this caliber?

I believe that 9" is considered the optimum. I run an 8" a 9" and a 12". They all have different loads that work best for them. The 12 and 9 shoot good but not as good as the 8". Length is not the reason. The 8 is just a better barrel.

What are you going to use it for? What are you going to shoot? Do you want to get the SBR stamp?

Yes on the stamp. I'm most likely going to use it for home defense but wouldn't mind using it for hunting.

If home defense is your goal, you can go as short as you want. If you will use hunting, I'd stick with 16", gain velocity, and save the stamp. 4-6" of barrel isn't heavy and isn't unwieldy.

You can look here: http://300aacblackout.com/resources/300-BLK.pdf  You can see 16" will gain you about 150fps and 150ft/lbs energy. On page 28.
