So I have a 5.56 DD 14.5" (16 pinned)
8.5 " 300 BLK (AAC barrel, seekins rest) 10.5 " DSG 5.56 (alternate SBR upper) I don't hunt. I really only shoot out to 100 yds mostly. once a year I might shoot to 300. I have a G3, 2 FAL's and a 700 police. I already have the caliber on hand, and load for it. Whats a 308 AR going to do that I need? FYI - 300 is my favorite. Just because of my mystic X - and the wife LOVES that gun. (She hates muzzle blast) Not a troll, but with all the BF deals pouring in, and many of them on 308 guns - Im trying to talk myself into / out of one. Other than "I dont have one" I cant come up with a purpose / reason for the thing. My wife and I love PCCs and sub-type guns, (my scorpion, mp5) so the 300 was a no brainer. Am I missing something? |

If not hunting, probably the only two other reasons for a .308 AR are still worthy.
In a SHTF scenario, the .308 is much more badass in many types of situations like...deadly at distance, shooting through objects, and blowing the crap out of what you hit. That's not saying there aren't many dead, departed souls at the hands of smaller calibers or that there aren't more powerful, bigger killing bullets. Still, the .308 fills the middle as a big bullet that does a great job in most cases. And the .308 can be bought in bulk so you don't have to take out a loan to shoot it quite a bit compared to other large calibers. And in the "not-bulk" category, there are some amazing bullets available off the shelf. The other reason for a .308 is the fun in an AR platform. I had a .308 bolt gun before my AR's. I shot it only to get it sighted in and to shoot game. It was a little punishing in the recoil department...a little. It wasn't that fun to shoot. When I got an Armalite AR10 .308 in a 20" barrel...wow!...what a hoot to shoot. With proper buffer and gas setup, annoying recoil is practically nonexistent. Liked it so much I built a 16" carbine version to accompany it. If you already like AR's, you're gonna like a big caliber AR. |

In a shtf scenario, I will be deploying maximum firepower and breaking contact. Thats not done with a DMR. Your latter point is valid however. Still, I dont know that it deserves the investment. I suppose Im trying to decide if its worth spending a grand on a scoped semi auto 308. |

The 308, in my eyes, is a jack of all trades caliber. It can do everything adequately. Yes, there are calibers that do better jobs at specific things, but nothing compares to the all around usefulness of the 308. If going the DMR route, theta much better calibers to choose from than 308. But in SHTF, only calibers that matter are NATO rounds. |

I dont follow He just really likes the 6.5 Grendel. Personally I like the large frame guns better. I have both. If you're going large frame, there are better calibers that hit harder on target, fly flatter, and don't get pushed around by the wind like .308 does, while also having less recoil. 7mm-08 .260 Rem 6.5 Creedmoor I've had 3 different .308's, everyone I know practically has an AR10 of some sort, I've worked on the guns, fixed them, done accuracy and reliability work, Cerakote, etc. My first AR10 was an ArmaLite/Eagle Arms 24" laser. Beautiful rifle that shot so well. I bought it in 2003. Got a DPMS LR-308 in 2007. Had GA Precision built me a fluted Obermeyer 22" .308 in 2007. I also have had two .260's, still have one done by GA Precision. It rarely gets shot because I can only hand load for it. It's a laser, shoots 5rd groups into .4" repeatedly, but I have kids man. I don't have a ton of time to reload. I shoot the 6.5 Grendel's way more, even more than 5.56 except for CQM training. Factory ammo is all over the place, and it loads quickly on the bench if you do reload. Impact on steel sounds more like a .308, and nothing like a 5.56. Just last weekend, I was at the range with a forum member testing 2 Grendel's, and when it was hitting the steel, guys were looking over, confused at how hard it was hitting. I've seen that same reaction several times now at that range. Recoil is less than half of a .308, but it fits in the AR15. I always wanted a .308 carbine, but the Grendel ruined it for me. It's simply pointless now for me, and every time I shoot someone's 16" .308 AR, my feelings get reinforced that much more. The weight, bulk, and recoil is just not justifiable when you see the on-target effects. I need to seriously do a side-by-side video comparison of the same barrel lengths, to illustrate what I'm talking about. I'm not trying to urinate all over anyone's parade, I'm really not. I just want to share the journey I have personally gone through, and why I am where I'm at now. |

Need vs. Want If it comes down to trying to find reasons to have something, then chances are you simply don't need it. That said, there's nothing wrong with simply wanting something just to have it. I pretty much have what I need in terms of what I would use for personal defense. I'm in a place right now where I simply buy more guns because I want them, not because I need them. As some have stated, if you live in a place that affords you the opportunity to have it, why not? No justification needed. |
|
Need vs. Want EXACTLY!
You hope you never NEED any of them, but how do you know what you need until you do? 2 blackouts (rifle/pistol), 2 5.56s, 6.5 Grendel, 6.8 SPC, .458 SOCOM, 6.5 Creedmoor, .308. I've only ever hunter with and AR twice. How many of these do I need? None I hope...however, there are a couple more I want. and if I do need them...well hell...there they are! |

Just a couple, is that rifle length? If so, what is the gas port size? |

Same here... I have over 25 AR15's including 6mmx45mm, .30HRT, 6.8SPC, .50 Beowulf, and last year I finally got into the AR10 game with a DPMS LR-65, which led to getting one of the spiffed up DPMS LR-308's with the PRS stock and 24" fluted barrel. The two large frame guns are HEAVY which led to me just recently building an Aero M5 16" .308 carbine... damn what a fun rifle.
I must have got lucky because it does not kick as bad as I thought it would, it's been 100% so far (fired another 40 rounds of 110 TAP today) and 80% of the brass appears to have no swipe marks at all, the ones that have marks are minor... so despite the port pressure issues that supposedly hamper these type rifles, I'm in the clear for now. Two of my friends fired it today and even they commented on nice it was to shoot. I'm in big trouble as I just ordered another M5 upper. lower, BCG, and CH... I'm going build another rifle... leaning towards a 6.5CM 20" but have not ruled out another .308. I have TONS of brass and ammo for the .308 which play a part in my decision to a degree. I volunteered to work Christmas OT because of this recent order...
I was either told or read it would be wise to avoid the 18" MLG 6.5CM barrels... so I've ruled that out. After the success of the recent 16" .308 build, I wish I had done it earlier... I see it getting a lot of range time... |

I see it getting a lot of range time... Yeah, 16" MLGS with 110gr TAP is going to purr like a pussy cat if the gas port is cut right and the gun is solid in the BCG and recoil system balance. ArmaLite has made wonderful little 16" MLGS (a bit longer than an AR15 MLGS) guns for decades now. 18" MLGS will give you a little more dwell, but would also run well with lighter weight pills. It's when you start shooting longer bearing surface and heavier bullets with a lot of dwell time that you hit the port hard with pressure well above what the gun was ever meant for. You can tweak it to work with those loads. For 6.5CM, my opinion is to go nothing less than RLGS. |

My 308 AR10 does one thing that my 5.56 AR15 cant ever do...
Sling armor piercing ammo out to 800+ yards. With that being said my AR15 is still my go to rifle and what i shoot 90% of the time but its nice to have the 308 option, and makes for a much better DMR than 5.56 does. |

I've had over a dozen AR308, including:
- DPMS (SASS + a couple of others) - LaRue OBR - KAC EMC - KAC EMR - LWRCi REPR - AR10A4C - AR10T - AR10A - DEF10 - Bushmaster ORC .308 - MA-TEN, Noveske .308 barrel - MA-TEN, Noveske 6.5 Creedmoor barrel And I'm sure I'm forgetting a few. That covers a range of rifles from $5k to under $1k. I've sold all of them, and currently have no plans to buy another AR308. It turns out the IDEA of an AR308 is alluring and fantastic, but once in hand the weight, recoil (huge BCG slamming back and forth), abuse of brass, finicky gas systems, lack of parts standards, and on and on just turn me off. For really long distance stuff I shoot a 22" barreled 6.5 Creedmoor bolt gun. It babies my brass, I can load long (much longer than mag length for an AR308) and I can do 10 round strings of fire using AICS mags pretty quickly if need be. Out to 600 yards or so (and for any hunting around here in WI) my 17" barreled 6.5 Grendel AR15 does really great with readily available ammo that ranges from $6/20 (steel cased) to $19/20 for match grade Hornady 123gr SST. For everything else, my standard 5.56 ARs are simply fantastic. |

Because its just a joyful platform to shoot. I built an Aero AR10 SPR style rifle, and its so fun to shoot, I am sure a carbine style AR10 is in my future. other builds to wrap up first though.
Edit to add: see the pic in the above post! just what I'm talking about. |
