I have an AR10 with an 18 inch barrel, I spoke to Armalite about getting a 16 Carbine barrel but they have none available and don't know when, which as a side note I thought was weird.
So I asked if I had my 18 cut to 16 and used a carbine buffer will it work, they said it should...Seems pretty simple to me.. Any thoughts? |

Though I've never done it, I see many comments/posts of professional cutting down barrels...like with ADCO. It's obviously no problem when done correctly. Now, as to finding a 16" Armalite AR10 barrel, I got one earlier this year from Rainier that they had in stock. At that time they had 3...don't know about now. I would suspect there might still be 16" barrels out there with other suppliers. Seems odd that Armalite doesn't know when they'll have any available since a 16" AR10 barrel fits the previous B-models and the newer, current A-models. That barrel should be common in their inventory. I have a 20" barrel .308 AR10 and turned my 20" barrel .243 AR10 into a 16" .308 carbine. I love that carbine version.
On another note, aren't there one or two other barrel suppliers out there that make/stock AR10 barrels?...or were you just wanting Armalite brand? |

Ooops, missed that. Will you be using an Armalite carbine buffer or something else?
And to add to that, my .243 AR10 already had Armalite's carbine buffer setup in a carbine extension tube and Magpul ACS stock. It works perfectly with the 16" Armalite barrel. I know one can get fouled up in the AR10 or .308 AR variants out there by using the wrong parts. I also think an adjustable gas block can be a nice addition on a .308 carbine for ideal gas tuning and case ejection. Most will work fine with a compatible buffer setup, but I later installed a JP adjustable gas block because of forward ejecting brass. Never had a jam or such, but I feel the rifle even recoiled more softly with the adjustable block. |

You'll have a 16" barrel with rifle length gas. Going to a carbine buffer "should" work as long as you use the right stuff. As in, their stuff. However, it could be a CYA thing to them saying it "should" work. They rarely honor a warranty when the customer mods the gun themselves. Unless done good and still using Armalite parts.
On the barrel availability, they never give out solid info on ETAs. On any parts really. They make alot, and a ton of it is spoken for before being made. Just keep checking in, calling in sometimes works best. |

Plenty of match grade ammo, used to be a 20" barrel moving to a carbine for size/fitment for concealed carry :)
ADCO would be the way to go... Quoted:
I'd leave it alone and spend your money on some premium match grade ammo instead. 2" won't matter one wit. If you decide to shorten it anyway I use ADCO Firearms and am amazed every time I do. Great work and fast turn around. |
