I am a huge fan of .308 rifles, in fact I own more .308's than 5.56.  One rifle that I have that I REALLY like is a DPMS RFLR-C.

http://www.dpmsinc.com/308-Classic_ep_100-1.html

I like the look, I like the balance, the sight radius, everything.  I just shot it in the Gen III Gun match this weekend and offhand I was 1 for 1 on almost every shot.  The problem came in when I had to rest on something, I experienced a pronounced POI shift.  I later verified this at a controlled range, light hand pressure = ok, anything tight and POI shifted.  So, now I know I need to free float this gun.

The problem is I don't really want to lose the look of the classic A2/A3 rifle.  I could put an aluminum or CF tube, but #1 I think they look goofy with standard front sight, and #2  don't really want to lose the look of the classic A2/A3 rifle.

On a 5.56 rifle, there are several companies that make a handguard free float tube, but so far I have not located one for .308, and White Oak got downright indignant when I asked them about it

We are not going to do this nor suggest someone else attempt it.

This rifle has standard A2 handguards and is .750 in diameter, so it seems the only fly in the ointment is the barrel nut interface.

So, Mighty Arfcom, that knows and sees all, help me please?  If someone makes this, please point me to them.  If there is a company or gunsmith that might make one, please enlighten me.  I cannot be the first person to want this...

I also like the classic look. And have wanted a DCM type tube for awhile. No one makes one, would have to be custom. You basically just need to weld a tube to the barrel nut, and the end cap to the tube. Getting the right length, and making sure it doesn't warp from the weld is the fun part.

I think the reason is not made is the NRA and CMP competitions let you have a quad rail. SWS makes some specifically for this. But you gotta be in a NRA team to get it.

I personally would love to use the MagPul handguard with the DCM tube.

This is the M110 (and one of America's finest) that is legal in NRA service rifle.  The commercial equivalent's such as the Armalite AR10 national match rifle are legal as well.  Since the M110 has a quadrail that's what service rifle must have.  For this reason there isn't enough interest for the competition builders to build a free float hand guard.

It is a nice rifle though.

Do you keep a log book?

PS:  I found the pic on the web. Not sure who it is.

Yeah I get that I don't need to have a standard hand guard for highpower service rifle, but like Isaid thats not really why I want it.

So, can anyone recommend me a gunsmith or custom shop that might be willing to accomplish this?

Doesn't RRA make free float tubes for the A2 handguards? Not sure if they are compatible, but worth looking into. Also I was just informed Compass Lake Engineering makes parts for free floating A2 handguards, again not sure they would be compatible but worth looking into.

Those are for ar15s only. Neither make them for lr308 or ar10 barrel nuts

UTG PRO made it the USA.
I got one on my wifes AR15 hunting rig.
Just received mine for the AR10.
They also have them for both high and low profiles.
You wont be disappointed.

When you get it installed on your AR10, can you post a few pics?
