Alright gun nuts here is a thumper...
I am looking to build a very specific .308 DPMS pattern AR but it has some stipulations that are causing a part sourcing nightmare. The upper is the only part of the build I am having trouble with. required specs: Upper DPMS pattern, Non-reciprocating Side charging upper receiver, Mid length or rifle length piston system (tricky to match with side charging BCG). I have looked at the JP PSC-12 but cannot source a piston system to work with it. Idk if a Frankenstein build like this is possible so I bring the question to you. A little background: The build isn't for me its for a veteran who lets me use his land to shoot on. Just trying to build something spectacular for this former sniper instructor. I have built several AR-15's of all configs, but this is my first .308 build. I have not promised anything just trying to plan it at this point. Trying to make it a surprise for him otherwise I would have had him source parts. May have to find some compromises if I can't find an answer. Thank you for any assistance |

Can't be done right now unless you get your hands on some Ruger 762 parts. Adams Arms said his setup can handle 308, but no one has done it yet. I'm not sure if their new GII sized 308 is built with a new piston design, or using his existing stuff.
Then you have the issue with the side charger. You're basically wanting to build an LWRC REPR. Which is going to take quite a bit of custom fabrication unless you get a donor rifle, which you might as well just rebuild rather than attempt to get the parts functional in something it's not supposed to be. With the cost involved with something like this, you might as well buy the LWRC. They are the only 308 AR style rifle with a side charging piston setup, them and FD Defense are the only ones i can think of. |

I started out by looking at the LWRC and trying to work backwards and it lead me to the FD Defense anyway. Kinda figured I'd either need to fab it or buy a repr. I just didn't know if the combo existed yet or not to do a build like this. Thank you for getting back to me |
