I just bought my first ar-15 and love the hell out of it.  Had it for 2 months and probably put 1100 rounds trough it already.  Only problem is I now have a Ruger 243 sitting in the gun closet that was my dedicated coyote gun.  Not going to get rid of the gun because it will be my sons first deer rifle, on the other hand I have a whole bunch of .243 ammo.  Instead of letting someone else shoot up all this ammo, why not build an AR-10 and blow it up myself.

Is it possible?  I have done some light searching and it doesn't look like I can just order what I want.  Anyone else have something specialized like this?

It looks like DPMS has several .243 offerings, including a sweet looking (to me) G2 Lightweight Hunter.  If DPMS can build one, you can build one or have one built to your specs.

Lmt has a 243 drop in barrel for their MWS series. Armalite also used to have an off the shelf gun. Look here

In bolt rifles I was a dedicated .243 and .308 user...reload for both too.  Both calibers covered a wide array of use.  If not for the annoying recoil of the .308 bolt gun, I probably would have shot it at just about everything.  Upon getting two Armalite AR10's in .308 and .243 last year, I never realized how soft shooting .308 AR's are...less than my .243 bolt gun.  I recently pulled my AR10 .243 barrel and replaced it with another .308 barrel so I'd have 20" and 16" AR10 .308's.  I think if you get an AR in .308, you may find the .243 to be unnecessary.  Ammo for the .308 is cheaper in bulk, and the good off-the-shelf stuff is the same price as .243.  I like the ballistics of the .243, but in AR's I'm not finding it to be the sweet spot it hits in a bolt rifle.
