I currently use 168 grain factory match ammo in my AR 10.  I want to hunt with it now and am wondering if there is a hunting round that is close to the ballistics of the 168.  Thanks for any help.

165 Sierra Game King, or the 168 Tipped Match King, or 168 Hornady AMax... All work great on deer sized game, and the SGK works decent on elk.

I'd check out the 168 AMAX from Hornady...good stuff!

I was going to post this ^^^^.

For elk, I would look at the Hornady GMX.

165 TSX are what I shoot. Expensive, but very accurate and lethal.

Barns TSX 165 or the Federal Fusion 165g.  Have had good luck with both.

This, but beware there are both 165 Pointed Soft Points and a 165  Hollow Point.  The HP is what I've been using for years.  It is NOT the same as the 168g SMK hollow point.

The 165g hollow point is expansive and at longer shots often fails to leave a good exit wound.  I've had them run for 15 yards or more before I find blood, usually on shots greater than 200 yards. I use them because of the massive internal damage and my rifle drives tacks with them.

Yup. They about covered it, heh.

And the 168 Amax / Tap is probably among the best general-purpose loads for an AR308. Generally accurate, and good performance on both zombies and medium-sized game.

The slice and dice slammer if you dont mind laying out $ is the .308 cutting edge 150 gr copper raptor.

BC is very close to the 165 game king but not quite up to the 168 amax.

I like the amax bullets too and one plus on the 168 amax is its a very cheap bullet.

If you reload, you would be hard pressed to beat Berger's 168 gr Match Grade Classic Hunter.  Berger makes some of the finest bullets IMHO.

I saw 9 or 10 cow elk killed with the 168gr AMAX from handloaded .308 Win and it works very well.

It depends on the game.  On South Texas whitetail I use 150 gr Hornady SST's, on larger African game I use 180 gr Nosler Accubonds which I do hunt all the time due to the fact that there are exotics on the ranch I work at.

I use Nosler Trophy Grade 165 gr ballistic tip ammo in my M&P 10. No complaints at all.

You guys are getting it done with that GII.  Nice pics.  What kind of kills did you see in these cases?  DRT's, short travel, kicken chicken, death spirals?  The Hornady A-MAX is a popular hunting bullet in many calibers, even though it seemed to have been meant to be a target bullet.

About half went down to the shot and nothing made 50yds. The AMAX is a very soft bullet and at the .308 Win speeds it works great.

My cow had both shoulders broken at 400yds. DRT.

Switched to the 155gr for a little flatter 0-600 trajectory. Hopefully will have a chance with it on spring bears.

Is that the 20" hunter threaded?  What's the weight of the gun as seen?  Nice set-up.

A-MAX's seem to have excellent weight retention and controlled expansion.

Custom barrels in 20 inch and 18 inch.

18 inch is 9.750 lbs without mag. Feels just like an 18 inch AR-15.

In my experience the AMAXs are soft and if driven hard "might" not get the penetration some might think required.

In relatively slower rounds ( .308 Win) the AMAX really seems to shine. Everybody that used that G2 was very happy with the bullets killing performance.

All those elk knew and showed they were hit hard.

As a side note those were a crop damage control type hunt and elk that have been eating corn, beans, alfalfa, and living in  a river bottom are really good eating. I just had  elk  loin in a browned butter and you simply can not buy any steak at any restaurant that  can compare.

ps. Dry Aged for 100 days.
