| I currently use 168 grain factory match ammo in my AR 10. I want to hunt with it now and am wondering if there is a hunting round that is close to the ballistics of the 168. Thanks for any help. |

I saw 9 or 10 cow elk killed with the 168gr AMAX from handloaded .308 Win and it works very well. <a href="http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/GreybullPrecision/media/2014%20Elk/DSC01292_zpssdsqlaox.jpg.html" target="_blank">http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb428/GreybullPrecision/2014%20Elk/DSC01292_zpssdsqlaox.jpg</a> <a href="http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/GreybullPrecision/media/2014%20Elk/DSC01285_zpsadlpqj6d.jpg.html" target="_blank">http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb428/GreybullPrecision/2014%20Elk/DSC01285_zpsadlpqj6d.jpg</a> <a href="http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/GreybullPrecision/media/2014%20Elk/DSC01286_zpsltaiqpjd.jpg.html" target="_blank">http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb428/GreybullPrecision/2014%20Elk/DSC01286_zpsltaiqpjd.jpg</a> <a href="http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/GreybullPrecision/media/2014%20Elk/DSC01295_zpspuzxmf7q.jpg.html" target="_blank">http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb428/GreybullPrecision/2014%20Elk/DSC01295_zpspuzxmf7q.jpg</a> Quoted:

I'd check out the 168 AMAX from Hornady...good stuff! Nice pics. What kind of kills did you see in these cases? DRT's, short travel, kicken chicken, death spirals? The Hornady A-MAX is a popular hunting bullet in many calibers, even though it seemed to have been meant to be a target bullet. |

The Hornady A-MAX is a popular hunting bullet in many calibers, even though it seemed to have been meant to be a target bullet. About half went down to the shot and nothing made 50yds. The AMAX is a very soft bullet and at the .308 Win speeds it works great. My cow had both shoulders broken at 400yds. DRT. Switched to the 155gr for a little flatter 0-600 trajectory. Hopefully will have a chance with it on spring bears. |

Is that the 20" hunter threaded? What's the weight of the gun as seen? Nice set-up. A-MAX's seem to have excellent weight retention and controlled expansion. Custom barrels in 20 inch and 18 inch. 18 inch is 9.750 lbs without mag. Feels just like an 18 inch AR-15. In my experience the AMAXs are soft and if driven hard "might" not get the penetration some might think required. In relatively slower rounds ( .308 Win) the AMAX really seems to shine. Everybody that used that G2 was very happy with the bullets killing performance. All those elk knew and showed they were hit hard. As a side note those were a crop damage control type hunt and elk that have been eating corn, beans, alfalfa, and living in a river bottom are really good eating. I just had elk loin in a browned butter and you simply can not buy any steak at any restaurant that can compare. ps. Dry Aged for 100 days. |
