What are you using for an upper recvr vise for a DPMS style upper?

Lots of guys like the DPMS .308 upper receiver action block

I would use a vice block system that holds the receiver horizontally in the vice.
Something like this...

I agree on that plasticX setup.  When I received it in the mail, my first impression was "ripoff".  It's small and compact and didn't look like it would grip a big caliber receiver properly.  Well, it turns out that it's definitely function over impression.  How it clamps the receiver in a vise and uses the two torque plates to assist in canting is pretty darned clever and effective...every bit as effective as the clamshell units that are more common...maybe more effective.  This unit may actually prevent receiver flex better than just the outside clamshell.  However, like any tool, read the instructions carefully and follow them.  They are very clear as to what plane or orientation you should have the clamps and receiver in the vise to perform different tasks to prevent damage.  I use it on a couple of AR10's and did a barrel change from 20" to 16" on one of them.

I use the wheeler one, not exactly sure what its called but I love it. Think its part number 156-888, I know you can also flip the receiver upside down and lock it into the picatinny rail which I have found very useful for gasblocks.

The DPMS receiver inserts will often gall or deform your pivot pin and takedown pin lugs, creating a lot of slop in your 6061 receiver sets if you use the cotter pins to cross-load through the work.

7075 billet sets are much more resilient to torque, but I still prefer the upper oriented sideways in between two flat insulators.  The size of your vice can play a big role in slippage vs. secure lock-up when dealing the large receivers.
