anyone run this in their rifle?  curious how it performs in the AR platform and how it handles hand loads.  I like the idea of that much more energy, and hope the accuracy follows as well.

I'm guessing you've probably seen this article, but if not, it's a good read.  This one is about an Armalite, but I suspect most issues apply to other AR's in this caliber.  I have a spare AR10 and was thinking about going to this caliber with a new barrel to compliment my .308 as everything else would still function just fine...maybe a needed buffer tweak at the most.  If I'm understanding correctly, you can go back to a more common .308...or some others...with just a barrel change if you didn't like the .338.

I like the "idea" of .338 Federal, but ammo and brass will have to be made, not purchased.

If you ever want to sell it........................good luck.

It doesn't out-perform plain old .308.

Bullet selection is severely limited compared to .308.

I've monkeyed around with a bunch of calibers in AR-15's and always return to 5.56mm. I have 6.5 Grendel, 6.8SPC, 6mmWOA and 7.62x39mm. None of these have shown the 100% reliability I get when shooting 5.56mm. Magazines are the main culprit and the fact that the gun was never designed for these rounds hurts as well.

Whether you will have any functioning issues with a .338 Federal remains to be seen. I can tell you categorically I would never consider using any of my AR's other than 5.56mm models for personal defense. Reliability is a number 1 priority and my 6.5 Grendel, 6.8SPC and 7.62x39mm have balked more than once. Sometimes more than once per magazine.

Whether the AR10 or DPMS based big bores will be reliable with this round I can't tell you.
