Hello everyone.  So I didn't realize that when I first got this gun that it would be a big deal to change the handguard out....Anyway, I watched a video, and it doesn't look too hard I have everything except for the vice block and the barrel nut wrench.  The video wasn't in great detail, so is there a writeup for these guns anywhere on changing this out?  Can the average person do it?  I am not a gunsmith, but I am mechanically inclined...I installed trigger kits in 2 LC9's without any issues, which requires a detailed strip.

If so, does anyone have any experience with this vice block?

I didn't want to buy a junk one lol.

What about the wrench?  What are the name's for them, and where can I buy the one that I need? I wasn't sure if they were the same for the AR's or what

I guess my last question is about the weight....It feels like I am lugging around a bazooka....Its a 24" stainless steel bull barrel...I have read that past 20" is minor gain....How much weight is shed off of 4"?  I can't imagine it being a tremendous amount, but figured I would ask.

This is the most recommended armorers block for a 308 upper.  http://www.dpmsinc.com/PANTHER-CLAWS-FOR-308-RIFLES_p_1119.html

Oh leme tell ya my nightmare with doing a barrel swap.

Lets see bent the handguard coming off the gun.. (surprised I didnt crack the upper)

Had to have the gas block cut off in a HASS tooling machine (nicked the barrel) that pissed me off...

Also broke 2 wrenches and a torque wrench in all.....

All due to Locktite being on the entire gun in every frigging item above... It was factory direct no clue if this is normal but I was a tad hot....

With the proper wrench, blocks and vice my gunsmith could not remove the barrel nut on my LR308. I had to take it to another guy with a hydraulic device. Apparently DPMS puts the barrel nut on really effing tight. Good luck.

Yup true story they put there crap on tight and use a gorilla to torque crap on. After dealing with mine I'm just going to leave it stock. I have the Recon 308.

Hmm, I didn't have any trouble getting the nut off my Oracle... armorer's tool with a 1/2" breakover did the trick.  Then again mine wasn't one of the models with a factory free float like yours probably has.

Now before we get all kinds of feedback... please read this before posting your experiences.

Over the years we have seen numerous cases of stuck or "cant get it loose" barrel nuts and free float tubes on our LR-308 platform.

When we receive uppers back for this issue 99% of the time the "gunsmith" did not have or use these to dissemble the upper.

Panther 308 free float wrench part 308-TL-01 http://www.dpmsinc.com/LR-308-and-AR-10-Free-Float-Tube-Wrench_p_1115.html

Barrel vises in most cases will not work nor does clamping the receiver in a vise without the panther receiver claw.

Please remember that you need the right tools to do the job! The nut could be torqued up to 80ft lbs

And please note we use medium strength thread locker in only these areas:
Gas block set screws
Free float tube on threads that attach to the barrel nut.
These areas must be heated to release the thread locker!

We do realize that every case may be different and these rifles are still built by humans so some legitimate issues over the years may have occurred.

Hope this helps someone out and thanks for buying DPMS!

Alright guys....I have decided this may not be the best "AR Variant" for me.  I want to take this gun coyote hunting and stuff...It is HEAVY and a lot to lug around...I found a guy with a M&P .308 that is wanting to trade me.  It has an 18" barell..I am left handed, and the safety would be right for me on his gun.  The gun doesn't have an adjustable stock, but it looks like its adjustable.  His gun also has a 10 round mag rather than a 20 round mag.

If I was to trade him gun for gun, he told me that he would be ok with me keeping my 20 round mag.  From what I could tell, the mags will interchange?  Also, my stock will be here today.  Will the stock that I ordered fit this M&P?

Does this seem like a fair trade?  Looks like it would be much more suited for what I want the gun for.

I thought using heat was SOP on a Bbl nut.
I also like the way you say "Gunsmith"

I just stuck mine in a vise with the jaws padded with some wood blocks.  Worked fine.
