If I have a DPMS lower, which uppers will fit it?
Are they proprietary? |
|
You will need a DPMS pattern upper receiver...There are only two main patterns designs for 308 AR platforms: The Original Armalite AR-10 pattern
and the DPMS AR-308/LR-308 pattern lowers...There are a few AR-308 pattern lowers that are proprietary and need the upper to match like some of the RRA and CMMG models that use either: FAL mags, M14 mags, or G3 mags for example. The 308 class AR platform unfortunately has not been standardized yet like the AR-15 has been, and thus the added confusion in this platform... There are now even bigger true Magnum class large frame AR's that will fire rounds like the .300 Win Mags and .416 Lapua's for boys with big wallets and such.. Good Luck. |
| DPMS, Fulton Armory, Tactical Machining, Sun Devil, Iron Ridge Arms, JD Machine, CMMG (Current Model), SI Defense, JP, Bushmaster (Current Model), Remington and Black Rain Ord uppers should all fit on a DPMS lower receiver. These all have a radius rather than an angle and accept the original AR-10 Waffle mag (Pmag, KAC Mag, DPMS Mag, etc) |

Wow. I have tried other radiused uppers and they did not fit, such as RRA, Sig and Knights. With that said I haven't tried any of the brands you mentioned. Thanks for that info! RRA is completely proprietary, and I'm pretty sure Knights uses the angled cut at the rear of the receiver like Armalite, Larue, MEGA, LMT etc.. |

You are right about Knights, I just realized they are AR10 pattern. |

AR pattern upper will *fit* a DPMS pattern lower, meaning the functioning parts will all line up. However, you'll be left with a gap where the angled upper doesn't fill the void in the rounded cut lower.
RRA is a completely different animal. Their receivers are about an inch or so longer, in order to feed from the FAL mags. |

You are right about Knights, I just realized they are AR10 pattern. KAC are not AR10 Patterened. They have an angled receiver but they are not AR10. KAC, LMT, LWRC, Mega, LaRue, Les Baer use angled receivers and can use Pmags. (The new AR10A can use pmags as well but have the incorrect thread on their upper receiver to accept rails that would work with KAC/DPMS labled rails). RRA is completely different than everyone else (expect for the old Bushmaster that used the RRA design). The others I listed before accept Pmags and have the KAC/DPMS upper receiver thread pattern. POF/Hogan uses a different size pivot/take down pin diameter than everyone else but using bushings provided by Hogan you can use radiused (DPMS type) upper receivers with their lowers. Hope this clears things up a little more |
