Been looking around, have a DPMS pattern upper, and need to hunt down a vice block.

Will the Armalite vice block work, or do I need something else?

Do you have a standard DPMS AR-15 vice block?

They can be used with .308 uppers also with a wood block.

No I do not have an ar-15 vice block, otherwise I would have checked to see if that was possible.

My question is because in my looking around I haven't seen an AR-308 upper vice block (that isn't the one that pops up inside the upper and pins in, which my research has indicated can cause issues when torquing down the barrel nut), nor any indication than an AR15 vice block would work.

I use this one. this right here

It works for anything with picatinny rails. AR10 and AR15, also works for my MaTen.

The one you mentioned can be used with wood blocks and no pins which puts no stress on the pivot pin holes. However, there are other options so whatever you prefer will probably work.

ETA: works like the one in the link above except it supports the inside of ther receiver too.

Neat. Beats the hell out of the 53 dollars I was going to spend... TO THE CHECKOUT LINE.

I have the derlin armalite blocks. I have lent them out to a dpms guy and he said they worked good.

I used a Brownells 308 AR Barrel Torque tool on my Maten build. No stress applied to the receivers. Works similar to the Geissele Reaction Rod for 1/2 the cost.

N.O.M.A.R. by Plastix Revolution. They make barrel blocks too

Flat-top upper?  For those, I just use a $6 cutting board.

I use the DPMS one - it fits snugly and I have no complaints.  I would not hesitate to buy one again.

When I was at Hogan, we modified a couple AR15 clam shell units to fit around the 308.

This is great:

Do NOT use this one below.  I know many have without issue, but I've seen plenty that destroyed the upper by inducing stress on the pivot pin and takedown pin lugs with those stuidly-devised pins and method of "securing" the upper in the vice.  The whole reason the DPMS .308 vice block was made was because the DPMS LR-308 receiver has a different profile to it that was incompatible with any of the receiver mounting solutions at that time.  Inserting and pinning into it this was is absolutely a terrible idea for 7000-series uppers.  6061 and other 6000-series aluminum are much more ductile, so you can get away with torquing them more, but not on the 7000 series aluminum, which is harder, and more brittle.

This is BAD-will rot your soul

We recently had a forum member who had sent his rifle back and forth with the mfgr several times, and the rear lug cracked during fire, causing automatic fire.  They accused him of doing work on it, which he claimed never to have done, always relying on the mfgr to handle and services.
