Dads buddy wants me to help him build a .308 AR. He doesn't know much about them. I have built a AR15 so I know what it entails but not 100% sure on the .308 variety. I typed this up and plan to show it to him. What are y'all's thoughts? Any input will be really appreciated. He wants more of a tactical type build instead of long range gun. To me that is determined by barrel, optics, etc. how does this list look?
Mega Upper/lower/rail $840 Rainier Barrel. $300 Muzzle device. $50-200 Buffer tube assy. $100 LPK. $100 BCG. $300 Charg. Handle. $60 Stock. $50-250 Gas block. $50 Gas tube. $30 ____________________ Total=. $1880-2230 These are from prices on Rainier Arms website. So it could be more or less than what's listed depending on what you want. Also some things such as receivers were out of stock when I looked. Also may need a tool or two. This does not include iron sights or any optics and only includes a basic lower parts kit (LPK) with a mil spec trigger. A good trigger can run over $200 by itself. Also a standard A2 style grip is in that LPK. Grips are fairly cheap though if you wanted a different one. Most of the main parts I have priced though are Quality parts from a reputable dealer. This also does not reflect FFL transfer fees for the lower receiver. No magazines are included so that is an added expense but PMAGs for .308 are readily available now I believe so that shouldn't be an issue. I am also thinking about just showing him the CMMG rifle for $1999.95. The CMMG comes with stainless barrel, key mod rail, surefire muzzle device and a gieselle 2 stage trigger. The trigger alone will add a couple hundred dollars to the scratch build. |

Can't really compare the CMMG with the MATEN, Your price list is a bit low and seems to skimp in a couple of key places. I would suggest adding 500-800 to get top of the line parts.
Quoted:
Mega Upper/lower/rail $840 Rainier Barrel. $300 - I would go with something a bit better, wasn't super impressed with the couple friends got for their builds. Figure 250 - 900 depending on what caliber / level of barrel you want Muzzle device. $50-200 - this should cover this category Buffer tube assy. $100 - I would go with an Armalite or LMT extended length buffer and spring or a regular extension with a slash's buffer - Figure about 150-200 LPK. $100 - If you get an ambi model, you should only need a couple of detents and springs. BCG. $300 - Stay away from the NIB or BS match , run either a Armalite or JP setup - figure 250-450 Charg. Handle. $60 - Stock. $50-250 Gas block. $50 - you might want to get an adjustable so figure 90-150 Gas tube. $30 BUIS - 100-400 Trigger 100-280 ____________________ Total=. $1880-2230 . |

IMO, it's one of THE best 308's out today LMT 308MWS You can find them a few hundred bucks below retail too. |
| Thanks everyone. All very good input and ill be sure to include it when I talk to him. He will be paying and ordering it all. I'm just trying to help him and will be assisting in the build. I need to talk to him about budget before I get too carried away. Not sure if he wants a budget build or a top of the line rifle. |
