Ok sold on the Grendel, looking for parts is what I expected. Can any of you fellows school me in who is to be avoided and who deserves my money.
Time is not an issue I know this will take a long time, I am worried about CS and getting screwed. I am wanting a 20 inch free float upper and liking the BHW barrel, I can figure I can always upgrade on that later. any suggestions on distributors? |

I suggest the LAR OPS-4 forged 7075 side charge upper. Its very rigid and all you need to do is swap the 556 bolt for your 6.5 bolt. I sold the 556 bolt that came with mine for $50 to offset the cost. It has held up well with my 7.62x39 so it should work great with a 6.5.
Good luck finding a 6.5 barrel and bolt. The consensus is that ASC mags work best. |
Same boat. Can't find the parts. Also planning on building a 20" barrel version. I want a Satern barrel if I can get one in stock. 1 in 8.75" twist. Have heard good stuff on BHW. Heard some people say you want a billet upper with the 6.5 but don't know if it's really necessary. I can't seem to catch ANY upper receiver in stock right now. Had parts on backorder for months and months. Lots of 6.5 barrels come matched with a bolt. This is something worth knowing, No headspace worries there, just use on 5.56 carrier and ur GTG. Barrel, bolt, and mag and GTG. Barrel is BY FAR the most critical piece so put your money there. Ain't hard cause they're expensive as hell! Good luck!

There are many sources for Grendel rifles and complete uppers. Most of these sources are also the ones who make barrels, so they are busy filling back-orders for complete rifles and uppers.
Alexander Arms Colt Competition JP Enterprises Precision Firearms Templar LAR Mfg Les Baer J&T Distributing Christiansen Arms LRP (new) Proof Research BHW provides barrels, as did Satern. Satern is way back-ordered, like at least a year from what I've seen on the Grendel Forum. There are more that I'm sure someone will pipe-in and add to the list. The Grendel works fine in standard forged uppers, but if you go with a bull barrel in any caliber, you will have better support for it using a billet upper. |
| AR Performance is the best I have found for product quality and customer support. Not sure what Harrison is doing as of late, I know he was back logged on running machines and had a shipment of bolts turn up missing, he was also talking about moving to a larger shop. This info is all 4 months old now but ARP would still be the go to source. |

The Black Hole barrels shoot like a house on fire. Wait times are getting shorter and you have a myriad of profile and lengths available including fluting if you want some non-standard looks. Mine shots very well and time after time the targets I have seen show excellent non-picky load performance.

Here is my 6.5 Grendel build with 24 inch Satern barrel, Mega Arms Monolithic upper and billet lower. As it set up (Magpul PRS stock, later on added a MIAD regular grip kit) it balances beautifully - and now optics. It has a Battlecomp BABC compensator - I might leave it on or take it off. But I need to test fire it soon. I am also going to add a Geissele 2 stage trigger to it.
http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af3/abnfoto/P1010838.jpg This is how you knew the barrel was properly set up in the Monolithic upper - this ensured proper headspace. http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af3/abnfoto/P1010831.jpg I have ten of the 17 round (I think) and 10 of the 25 round stainless steel magazines with the blue anti-tilt followers. Anyway, they look like regular 20 round and 30 round 5.56mm magazines. |
| I have a Grendel that I built with an AR Stoner 24in barrel. it will shoot 100 and 107 well but not a chance in the world for it to group well with the 123gr bullets. because of that im just not real happy with it. I did order a BHW barrel. it looks great but ive been waiting for a type 2 bolt. after reading the threads here I did order one yesterday from tactical ammunition. once I get it I may swap barrels to compare. but I don't think I would buy the AR Stoner from midway again. |

Who knows what reamer AR-Stoner is using. Everyone on the Grendel Forum that has measured their maximum COL comes up shorter than Grendel COL, so we know that a different reamer is being used. Some of them shoot well, others not so much. Don't know where they are getting the barrels from either, but considering their general rule of 50% margins, the source probably isn't any of the usual mass-producers in the US. I would like to know myself, but no way is anyone telling.
No matter what I spit out of my 16" AA ER Shaw barrel, I get anywhere from just under .8 MOA, to barely over 1 MOA, even at 200yds, where I do a lot of my grouping now. Best at 200yds has been 1.69" for 4 rounds of the Hornady factory 123gr A-MAX load. Worst was just around 2.3" a few weekends ago with hand loaded 123gr A-MAX on top of 31.0gr CFE. I just mass-produced that load and use it because it's plenty fine to shoot steel out to 600yds with, and isn't over max. If you call up Jake at The Gun Vault at 801-243-7978, he can square you away with a Grendel using a Pac-nor Super Match barrel. I just found out about that a few weeks ago. |
