Me and a buddy of mine built our LR308's recently. The possible problem I think I am having is this; We broke in our barrels last weekend, the thing I noticed is when I shoot my rifle I get about 1 foot fireball out of the end of mine, where he doesn't get one at all. The reason I am concerned is that these two rifles are exactly the same. All parts minus the glass are exact. We had technical inspections done on the rifles as well as having the gas keys staked and the headspace checked. The armorer who did the tech inspection said everything was good to go on both rifles. So I guess my question is should this be happening with my rifle? Is this something I should be worried about?

We were shooting the same ammo out of each with the same results. We shot around 40 rounds of Magtech 158 gr and another 40 of Hornaday 165 gr.

Are you talking about the LR 308 bull barrel?
If so, you are lacking the part known as a "Flash Suppressor."
Therefore, the flash will not be suppressed.
I had the AP4 version with 16" barrel and it still would throw a fireball at times.
You will not get a flash with each round, and you may not have been noticing it coming from your friends.

Thanks for the reply dirty one!

We both have 18.5" light weight 1x10 chrome lined barrels by criterion, yes there is no flash suppressor on either one yet. Once we noticed the difference between them we paid very close attention to the both rifles as we shot them. Just didn't make since because we were both shooting pretty much the same rifle and the same ammo. Again, just trying to make sure there isn't anything going on with mine as opposed to his. Thanks again for the responses.

Please forgive any ignorance, this is my first time owning or shooting the 308 version of the AR.

Not an ignorant question.
I had a bull barrel .223.
While shooting it and looking through my scope, I would be blinded by the fireball.
It was very distracting.

No 2 barrels are identical. They're pretty close, but not identical.

It's quite possible that in-bore friction between the two is different, leading to a larger amount of unburned powder exiting your barrel.

You didn't chronograph them by any chance?

Thanks for the reply!!

No we havent chronographed them yet but we have plans to. Is there something I should be looking for when we do?

Just a velocity difference between the two guns. I'd guess yours might be a touch slower.
