Hey guys, I am a newbie to the 308 AR scene... I have ar15s but when it comes to 30 cal I have always had bolt actions... however, something is about to cast me into the world of the 308 ar... that thing is the AXTS AX762 lower... I am in the process of building a AX556 lower/KAC upper and if/when the AX762 is released I am probably going to have to sell my 300 RUM A-Bolt and put that money towards a AX762 build. So that being said, at this point I am looking for a complete upper receiver that will fit the AX762... Now I have heard some confusing things aboht the AX762 lower. I know that the protos were built for DPMS uppers... however I have been hearing that the end product will be sr-25 compatible. So, first of all I am unclear on the difference between the DPMS and sr-25. From what I have heard, the only difference is the shape of the upper/lower where they meet. So, assuming the AX762 is going with the sr-25 design, what other manufacturers make uppers that are compatible? Unfortunately KAC doesnt sell their sr25 just as uppers like they do their sr-15... and I much prefer the AXTS design to the KAC lower design. Right now the best choice I am seeing is the REPR complete upper.... I have been told this is a sr-25 compatible design. I have never owned or even fired a piston AR... but I am not necessarily opposed to it... that being said, I will scour the internets looking for someone who wants to sell their SR-25 upper to me because 1) I would love to have a matching KAC sr-15 with AX 556 lower and KAC sr-25 with AX762 lower... those would be the centerpieces of my firearms collection....
All this being said, can anyone let me in on WTF all of the manufacturers were thinking when they designed their 308 ARs? Now I get why the AR-10 design is different, due to different magazines, but why wouldn't all of the PMAG compatible 308 makers go with the standardized design like the ar-15?
