no one knows if i can  change just the barrel to a different caliber?

[#2]
Probably not. What other caliber did you want to convert it to?

You would need to change the bolt as well.

You would need an entirely different gun for a .308.

why is that?

[#8]
The .458 SOCOM was designed to be a big bore cartridge in an AR-15, which is restricted to a magazine length of ~2.260".

The .308 is loaded to 2.800" and thus the semiauto guns designed for it, the AR-10, LR-308, SR-25 etc. are all physically larger guns.

ok. thanks i understand. the bullets and mags are larger. along with the lower and upper all needing to be completely different.

Now you got it.  Length is the problem, not the bore size.

so realistically the only thing i could change it out to is .223

.300 Blackouts are popular these days too.

would i need a different bolt for a 300 blackout or .223

Yes, the SOCOM is a different rim diameter than those 2.

.300 blackout And .223 use the same bolt. I'd suggest building a whole new upper though.

I understand now.  Yes, you can swap out the barrel and bolt on the gun to a different caliber. Lots to choose from. Most popular are 5.56, 6.8, 300BLK and 6.5 Grendel.

As others have said at the least you'd have to swap barrels and bolt.
