I got my DPMS 308 upper put together from a AR15 dealer/builder in my area. I am not really sure if they checked the headspace but when
I called them, they said I should be fine unless I am building a rifle with a brand new barrel and barrel extension being put together...my barrel is from Reiner Arms with the extension already pinned of course... Am I good to go on this rifle....or should I check the headspace????? FYI...I loaded a dummy round on the upper and the bolt did close. |

Normally once the barrel manufacture assembles a barrel they will headspace it once the barrel extension is torqued and pinned to the barrel. on a AR ...
It's never a bad Idea if you have reason for concern that a AR barrel has not been headspaced or has not been properly headspaced. You will need a "GO" and "NO GO" gauge set to do a proper headspace check with your bolt. Good Luck. |

Did you send your bolt to RainArms to have the barrel head spaced to your bolt? Is it an old barrel. If it's an old one you used before, use the same bolt.
Most Barrel makers will fit their barrel to your bolt. There is no Mil. Spec. for .308's As such there are larger tolerance's between items. Tread carefully/ |

I bet the military checks 308 headspace. OP - Generally if you are using reputable parts you should be fine but it is always a good idea to check headspace. I just did a 308 build changing out my DPMS 24" SS Bull to a Fulton 18" med wt and checked headspace with a no-go. Came out fine, cycles ammo without any markings or signs of over pressure. |

How many rounds has your bolt seen already? I hadn't fired more than 100rds though the 24" so really not much to worry about. I would at least see if somebody has a no-go gauge close to you that will lend you one to check it out. Maybe I'm wrong but too small of a chamber seems to be much more rare than too large of a chamber and too large of a chamber is generally more dangerous so a no-go would be at the least. I figure if brass or the bullet doesn't show any damage and the round chambers hand cycling using reputable ammo, probably good to shoot. If the spent brass doesn't have signs of over pressure then probably GTG. |

This bolt has fired more or less a hundred rounds...but not by much.
I have asked some of my shooter friends but no one seems to own any gauge...so I ordered a set this evening ( go, no-go and a field gauge ). I spent a few bucks but what the hell...I'd rather spend 75 dollars than blow my face or my trigger finger...
I hand cycled 2 dummy rounds then 19 rounds of the Zombie Max and it looks good to me...the only thing I saw is the extractor leaving a scratch on the ejected round ( where the extractor claws the round ) very very small scratch...if you dont look for it you wont even see it. I have not test fired the weapon yet...I figured I might as well wait till the gauge comes in. I figured I am good to go with the headspace...but I dont want to be the dumbass at the range who blew up his trigger finger and a brand new rifle...
