Hey guys, figured i would get the best answers right here. Someone i know from my neighborhood asked me if i could help her with getting a 308 AR for her husband, either for hunting season, or for his Christmas present. She asked me because I know her husband, and I have built my own AR15 which I believe she gathers is a cheaper way to go.
She was asking me if she could save money either on a used one, or if I built one. I have not been able to find many deals on used ones that were NY legal, but i have no idea if I could save her any money by putting the gun together myself by getting the parts through DPMS? The goal would be to get a rifle similar to the DPMS LR-308, which has a MSRP of 1199, and probably would cost me around 1100? Remember it would have to be ban compliant, can i save her some money by ordering the parts individually? Any help would be appreciated. |

In my opinion as it pertains to .308ar the price really climbs when you begin to seek specialized quality parts if you intend to build based off the DPMS i would just buy the rifle already assembled. It can be done at a good price or cost but my research has shown me that for Quality and or Soecialized parts 1500-1650 will be the minimum. However, a lr308 with 24" bull barrel can be had for 900-1050 in some cases. Take this as my opinion this is not concrete fact. Hope this helps. |

Definately cheaper to buy the DPMS LR-308 as a complete rifle...Some Walmarts carry the rifle for as little as $950-$995 in basic trim.
Complete Upper: $700-$800 Stripped Lower: $300-$400 Lower Parts Kit: $75-$85 Stock Kit: $75-$95 308 Buffer & Spring: $40-$50 Not having to source LR-308 parts: Priceless Good Luck. |
| its fun to build them for sure but buying one make more sense right now, i got lucky and built 2 carbines for under 1k but it was luck. if you wait and watch the ee you can do it. the 3 things that cost are the barrel, bcg and hg. those are the ones i like to spend $$ on. |
| I went through the same thing a while back and it turned out to be cheaper to simply buy the complete rife off the shelf. I wanted a simple hunting rifle and the cmmg MKIII .308, model # 38A20FB worked perfectly. It's very accurate and with a 18" barrel and 3-9x40 bdc scope comes in at 8 3/4 pounds empty. blue |
