I took my new AA 50 Beowulf Entry upper out yesterday. I shot 18 rounds of various loads and only 2 of them ejected and neither of those cycled a new round. The ammo was handloads using data out of Hornady's 8th ed. Here are the loads I was using:
350gr Berry's RS from the starting load of 28.8gr Lil Gun up to 34.2gr (Max in Hornady is 35.6 for 350gr XTP). COL: 1.120 (seated to cannelure per Berrys) 300gr Hornady FTX - 35gr Lil Gun (start=30.5gr and Max is 38.8 in Hornady manual) COL: 2.250 500gr Hornady XTPFP - 26gr Lil Gun (start = 21.8 and Max is 28.1 in Hornady) COL: 2.240 I had a buddy shoot it a couple times and I can see the bolt come back about an inch and I could see brass in the ejection port, it just wasn't coming back far enough to cycle. I did try it without a magazine and it didn't eject then either. I have a carbine buffer tube and spring with a heavy buffer. I have another lower with a rifle buffer/spring, I may try that. Any thoughts or suggestions? Is it possibly under gased? |
| I tried every combination I had, Heavy and Std Carbine Buffers - 2 carbine lowers, 1 lower with a rifle length buffer, and it worked just slightly better, 4-10 ejected, but 2 of those stove piped and I have yet to chamber a new round. I took apart the gas system and there didn't seem to be any burs, clogs, debris, etc that might be causing issues. I also pulled a few of my reloads to verify charges and nothing was off. I went ahead and loaded up a few more rounds at max charge weight (what AA website recommends), so if that doesn't work I guess I'll have to send it back to Alexander Arms. |
| I put the gun back together and didn't notice anything obvious. I loaded up some full power rds and went out and shot 10 of them. All but 1 ejected (stovepipe) but none of hem loaded a new round and a couple didn't cock the hammer. I'm getting frustrated and I guess it's tie to call AA. |

I would send it back, but I would expect the gas port is too small. We typically run batches of 300 units and these would go through porting at the same time. Drills are serial numbered to the job and typically replaced at 100 barrel intervals. The final operation is to de-bur the internal and external edges of the hole. The tool is supported by the hole so an undersize hole would stop the operation. |

In this instance we will probably need the complete set up. Our rifles and uppers are 100% fired for function prior to dispatch so something strange is going on. |
| Called AA and spoke with Bill Alexander for 20-25 minutes. Pretty cool have the owner care enough to spend time on the phone troubleshooting an issue. We decided we needed to send it in, so hopefully I'll get it back fully functional. I'm super impressed with AA customer support so far!! |
